Gwyneth Paltrow is an MCU star and a businesswoman with a net worth of about $200 million. She is also an Oscar winner. So life must be pretty much perfect for the actress, right? But that’s not really true. The star recently talked about being derided for her Oscar win. Paltrow won an Oscar for Best Actress in 1999 for Shakespeare in Love.
When her name was announced at the ceremony, she burst out crying, and that continued at the podium. Initially, everyone understood that she was overcome with emotions, but later on many seemed to think she went over the top with her crying. As per the star, this shift resulted in the media becoming insensitive towards her.
Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals The Vicious Media Hounding Post-Oscar Win
On the Call Her Daddy podcast, actress Gwyneth Paltrow revealed how poorly she was treated by the media post her Oscar win in 1999. The Marvel star stated that she could feel the media and even the public turning against her, even though they were generally supportive of her till then. She said:
“I felt a real pivot on that night because I felt like up until that moment everybody was kind of rooting for me in a way. And then when I won, it was like too much, and I could feel a real turn.”
What made it worse was the fact that her father was battling cancer and the media hounding made her feel like she was fighting alone against the world. She explained:
“He was really debilitated. It was just this totally overwhelming moment. And, you know, I was 26. I cried and people were so mean about it and I just thought, ‘Wow there’s this big energy shift that’s happening. I think I’m going to have to learn to be less openhearted and much more protective of myself and filter people out better.'”
The Seven star specifically mentioned the British press being abominable to her. But she forgave all of them because they didn’t necessarily know what was going on in her personal life. She said,
“I remember I was working in England… and I remember the British press being so horrible to me because I cried. And they didn’t necessarily know that my father was dying of cancer.”
But that wasn’t the only problem the actress faced after her Oscar win.
Gwyneth Paltrow Reveals Her Existential Crisis Post Her Oscar Win
Gwyneth Paltrow became an Oscar winner at the age of 26. Her 1999 win was her only nomination and win, but it shifted everything for her. She was accompanied by her parents that night and gave a tearful speech thanking them as well as everyone else. For many stars, an Oscar win propels them to do greater things. But Paltrow thought she had reached the zenith already.
She said,
“Once I won the Oscar, it put me into a bit of an identity crisis, because if you win the biggest prize, like what are you supposed to do? And where are you supposed to go? It was hard, the amount of attention that you receive on a night like that and the weeks following, it’s so disorienting. And frankly, really unhealthy.”
But the Emma star isn’t planning on returning the much-coveted statue and starting over to challenge herself. She said, “Not that I would give it back or anything. It was an amazing experience, but it kind of called a lot of things into question for me.” Thankfully, she went on to achieve other highs after her win, like becoming a Marvel star and opening her business, Goop.
