Every now and then some role would come along in every A-lister’s career in which their character is supposed to do things their real self wouldn’t do in real life. Many actors in the past have had to smoke for their roles in movies, even though they are not regular smokers in real life and such is also the case for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie, Oppenheimer star, Cillian Murphy.
Cillian Murphy has already become a household name for his portrayal of Thomas Shelby in Netflix’s Peaky Blinders. The Irish actor recently opened up about how smoking so many cigarettes on the set of Peaky Blinders and Oppenheimer could not possibly be good for his health.
Cillian Murphy talks about smoking herbal cigarettes for his roles
Cillian Murphy is most well known for his portrayal of Thomas Shelby in Netflix’s drama series Peaky Blinders. The Irish actor is known for his absolutely incredible portrayal of his character which has even won him an Irish Film & Television Award. After having collaborated with Christopher Nolan on many projects over the decade, the actor finally got a lead role in the legendary director’s upcoming movie, Oppenheimer in which he is all set to play the role of famous physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer.
Cillian Murphy’s portrayal of Thomas Shelby and J. Robert Oppenheimer has required the actor to smoke a lot of herbal cigarettes in his works and while talking in an interview for his upcoming movie Oppenheimer, the actor opened up about smoking so many cigarettes and said,
“I’ve smoked so many fake cigarettes for Peaky and this. My next character will not be a smoker. They can’t be good for you. Even herbal cigarettes have health warnings now.”
Oppenheimer is all set to release later this month and would be released on the same date in theatres across the world along with Margot Robbie’s Barbie.
The Peaky Blinders actor forgot to take meals while filming Oppenheimer
Cillian Murphy recently opened up about working on his upcoming movie, Oppenheimer with Christopher Nolan and revealed that he was so dedicated to the role that he forgot to take meals in between filming. He was talking about the filming experience for the movie and said,
“It’s like you’re on this fucking train that’s just bombing. It’s bang, bang, bang, bang. You sleep for a few hours, get up, bang it again. I was running on crazy energy; I went over a threshold to where I was not worrying about food or anything. I was so in it, a state of hyper …hyper something. But it was good because the character was like that. He never ate.”
Cillian Murphy further added that it was J. Robert Oppenheimer’s bad living habits like skipping meals, sleep deprivation, and smoking cigarettes and pipes a lot that lead the physicist to an early death at the age of 57.
Oppenheimer is all set to be released in theatres on 21 July later this month.
