“They asked for 33 rewrites”: Doctor Strange 2 Star Blasts Marvel, Claims Studio’s Heavy Interference Killed Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sequel

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness managed to get a lot of polarising reviews with many people liking the focus on Wanda and many others disliking the shadow that was put on Doctor Strange. Benedict Cumberbatch’s movie was supposed to be an epic opening to the idea of the multiverse outside of the view Loki had provided. However, it missed various parts with its focus being unclear.

There was a lot of criticism of the movie and it was a nonstop conundrum of just how much downfall a massive movie can gain. While there was a lot of chaos within the movie, there was much of it outside as well. To stand up for the film and the writers, Xochitl Gomez decided to defend Michael Waldron and his writing.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness saw so much criticism that from being the most anticipated movie, it turned into one of the most disliked projects of phase four. Although the movie was not as hated as many would presume, it certainly wavered far from the fans’ expectations. Whether the criticism was for the CGI, the script, or otherwise, the movie was way off what it was intended to be.

Xochitl Gomez decided that enough was said and someone had to stand up for the movie and what good it was supposed to do. She confirmed that the original draft that was written by Michael Waldron had indeed been brilliant. However, the interference from the studios forced Waldron to change the script thirty-three times. According to her, creative control had more of a pseudo-presence than anything. Since a lot of what he was trying to execute was written off or completely changed, removing the chance of him wanting his ideas to manifest.

Why Did Doctor Strange 2 Face So Much Criticism?

Doctor Strange 2 had a lot of qualities with the movie being carried wholly by Elizabeth Olsen and her brilliant skills as an actor. However, the factors that were a hard miss became too overwhelming to just avoid. If Spider-Man: No Way Home had not been as good as it was, the Lizard’s involvement would have been more talked about subject.

Similarly, Benedict Cumberbatch’s movie was a hit and a miss. It had an idea that, if executed properly, would have been a project on par with some of the greatest movies of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Unfortunately, it seemed cramped up with too much happening without a proper outcome. The multiverse was barely explored and that which was hyped about was not able to live up to expectations.

It seemed confusing with a wrong title in particular since the premise was purely based on Olsen’s character and her journey. Xochitl Gomez and Cumberbatch had barely anything to do with the movie outside of their powers, especially America Chavez. Had the movie been named the Scarlet Witch movie or a WandaVision extension then the case would have been very different.
