Lawrence continues to make waves, and her recent appearance at the prestigious Cannes Festival only solidified her star status. However, the unexpected twist came when acclaimed filmmaker Quentin Tarantino expressed gratitude for not casting her in any of his cinematic ventures. While Jennifer Lawrence’s success and talent are widely acknowledged, Tarantino’s unconventional perspective added a unique layer to the narrative, which intrigued fans and industry insiders.
Why Quentin Tarantino Refused To Work With Jennifer Lawrence
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Quentin Tarantino reminisced about his encounter with Jennifer Lawrence regarding his 2015 film, The Hateful Eight. The acclaimed director revealed that he initially approached Jennifer for a starring role. However, after carefully considering her busy schedule, it became apparent that her commitments would clash with the film’s production. Consequently, Tarantino made the difficult decision not to cast her.
“I’m a huge Jennifer Lawrence fan,” Tarantino explained. “And I can see her doing a good job with this role, so we went to talk about it and everything. She was just doing me a courtesy to see me, I think. She was doing Joy. She had to do all this publicity on the Hunger Games movies… There was just no […] way in the world that she was available.”
In the end, Jennifer Jason Leigh secured the role, a decision Quentin Tarantino deems as the correct one. He expressed gratitude for not selecting a younger actress. This acknowledgment underscores Tarantino’s careful consideration of the characters’ ages and its pivotal role in shaping the casting decisions.
Not The First Such Instance Of Jennifer Lawrence
Interestingly, Jennifer Lawrence had another potential collaboration opportunity with Quentin Tarantino. Reports suggest that she participated in a reading session for his 2019 film, Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood. However, when the final cast was unveiled, it featured renowned actors such as Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio, among a constellation of other stars.
During a 2021 episode of the WTF Podcast, Quentin Tarantino shared this revelation, leaving fans intrigued. However, the acclaimed director did not provide a specific reason for Jennifer Lawrence’s absence from the final cast.
“Early on, in the pre-production of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I flirted around with the idea of … Jennifer Lawrence playing Squeaky,” he explained. “She came down to the house to read the script ’cause I wasn’t letting it out. So she came down to the house, and I gave her the script and said, ‘Go in my living room or go outside by the pool and read it.'”
The Hateful Eight is available for streaming on TNT.
