The movie tells the story of a couple who goes on a European vacation to reignite the spark in their monotonous marriage. Things take a turn for the worse when they find themselves being framed for the death of an elderly billionaire, and hilariously try to navigate their way out of the situation while trying to catch the real murderer.

Critics gave mixed reviews for the movie, and many of them simply hated it. Despite the sour reviews, it seemed that audiences fell for Aniston and Sandler’s charm, and loved the film. In June 2019, the action comedy broke the record for Netflix’s biggest opening weekend. 30.9 million Netflix users watched the movie within the first three days of its release.

With the audience’s positive response, it didn’t take long for the sequel to get the green light.

After the movie’s debut, the duo spoke about the sequel in an interview.

“We probably got a call not longer after that,” Aniston said in a new interview where she was joined by Sandler.

“I think it started with, ‘It would be nice if we did another one,’” Sandler added. “And we were like, ‘That sounds cool.’”

“And if there’s a great idea,” said Aniston. “You know, especially when something does that well. Though it’s a tall order to try to match it.”

The Friends star also revealed that she came very close to filming the sequel to her 2013 family comedy, We’re The Millers. “There was talk about that, But that one didn’t happen.”

Aniston also went on to add that she had absolutely no interest in filming any further installations of Leprechaun, the horror film that marked her Hollywood debut in 1993.

“I had had it with leprechauns,” the actress cracked before breaking into a light Irish accent.

“That was enough luck for me.”

Murder Mystery 2 is now available to stream on Netflix.
