Remember the 2014 science fiction movie, Edge of Tomorrow, starring Tom Cruise and Oppenheimer star, Emily Blunt?
Cruise portrayed William Cage in the Doug Liman-helmed film, who battled aliens with the help of Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Blunt) and his newly discovered time-loop ability. The film was praised for its distinct plot. Thus, fans have been curious about whether a sequel to the bold action film was planned ever since.
Emily Blunt would be open to an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, even though it might be physically demanding. The high-profile movie never got a sequel despite being a box-office hit and receiving favorable reviews.
During her appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actress expressed her desire for a sequel and disclosed that she has previously read a script for a movie’s sequel.
Oppenheimer Star Was Offered Sequel to Tom Cruise’s 2014 Film?
As the star of Jungle Cruise, Mary Poppins Returns, and the first two Quiet Place films, to mention a few, Emily Blunt has no shortage of work. She was recently seen in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.
However, there is one project that a lot of science fiction enthusiasts have been looking forward to seeing: the much-anticipated Edge of Tomorrow sequel.
For those who have been waiting a long time for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel, Blunt has good news. Her recent demonstration that she was not the one stopping the potential movie from happening can be encouraging.
An interview that Blunt had done for the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike is now available to listen to online. In the conversation, Horowitz brought up Edge of Tomorrow, and the actress quickly remembered how taxing the bulky exo-suit she had to don for the film. She pointed out:
“I don’t forget. No, my back still tweaks out on me sometimes, you know?”
Even though the 40-year-old actress had back pain during the film’s production, she was still optimistic that Edge of Tomorrow 2 would be made.
She even said that she had even read the screenplay for the potential sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, and she would be willing to come back whenever Tom Cruise decides to make the movie.
“I wish there could be [a sequel]. There was [a script] that Doug [Liman] kind of slithered over to me… I would love to make it a reality, but I just don’t know when, or how, or how many Mission: Impossibles does [Tom Cruise] need?”
Emily Blunt Praised His Edge Of Tomorrow’s Co-Star
Jez Butterworth, John-Henry Butterworth, and Christopher McQuarrie wrote the screenplay for Edge of Tomorrow, which was directed by Doug Liman. The 2014 sci-fi action film took place in an alternate universe where an alien race has taken over Europe.
In the movie, Emily Blunt played a soldier who assisted Tom Cruise‘s character in developing his fighting skills. Although there have been discussions about a sequel for years, it is still unknown if Edge of Tomorrow 2 will ever actually happen. The film received positive reviews and was a moderate box office success.
Blunt went on to say that her co-star’s character was distinct from his prior typical roles:
“Come back to the side where you can be… you know, wasn’t he brilliant [in Edge of Tomorrow]? He was amazing as the cowardly hero… I adored him. He was the best.”
Later, the Jungle Cruise actress said of creating the follow-up:
“I’m so ready. I’m not the impediment. I promise.”
Additionally, Blunt stated, “Well, I would love to do another one,” in a Deadline interview.
“I don’t know when and I don’t know how, but I would love it. I don’t know if my back could take it.”
She is currently enjoying the success of Oppenheimer, her latest biographical thriller film, directed by Christopher Nolan. Josh Hartnett, Florence Pugh, Robert Downey Jr., Cillian Murphy, and Matt Damon were among the other actors who starred in the movie.
