All thanks to James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy is considered one of the best MCU trilogies yet. The franchise delivered some of the most iconic characters who have a deep impact on the fans. While the latest installment of the franchise provided a beautiful closure to their story, a recent statement by Zoe Saldana hints that Gamora has more story yet to tell.
James Gunn already stated that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be his last MCU project after he found a position on the High Table of DC Studios. The latest Guardians movie also gave a perfect sendoff to our beloved characters. While Peter Quill is the only character who promises to return to the MCU at the end of the movie, Zoe Saldana’s words add more to the story.
Will Zoe Saldana return to the MCU?
Zoe Saldana was introduced as Gamora in the MCU in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Her performance as the daughter of Thanos had a significant impact on the audience and she turned out to be a favorite among many. But similar to Dave Bautista, Saldana also expressed her intention to retire from the MCU following the third GotG movie until her latest statements.
When the Avatar actress recently spoke in an interview, she addressed how James Gunn took a unique take on Gamora. The character’s entire arc was changed after the events of Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame which led to a younger version of Gamora taking over the role. But still, the story of Vol. 3 didn’t follow the traditional stereotypical love angle. According to Zoe Saldana, despite being a “bittersweet decision”, it was the perfect thing to do with the character.
“I did. It was a bittersweet decision, obviously. I wanted to know that in the final chapter, Gamora stays on and finds a way to become a Guardian again. But this felt like the right way to end things for her, because of what she had been through.”
The ending of Vol. 3 showed Gamora parting ways with the Guardians to join the Ravagers while Chris Pratt‘s Star Lord decided to leave the Guardians to reunite with his grandfather on Earth. But Zoe Saldana feels that it might not be the last of the duo in the MCU. She teased that the unrequited love might bother Gamora which can see the two reuniting in a future project.
“I think the whole thing with Peter bothered her, because even though she had no recollection of who he was, she had a sense that it must have been special. And I appreciated that takeaway because it kind of gave us the hope that if the Guardians seek help again from the Ravagers, maybe Gamora and Peter will find a way back into each other’s lives, even if it’s just as friends.”
Although the 45-year-old’s comments show an optimistic future for the reunion of Star-Lord and Gamora, it might not be a comeback for Zoe Saldana. It must be noted that the mother-to-three has repeatedly presented an idea of a different face which shows that even if Gamora returns, Saldana might not.
Will Gamora be recast in the MCU?
The idea of recast isn’t new in the MCU with heroes like Bruce Banner and War Machine. But looks like we can also see it with Gamora.
Prior to the release of GotG Vol. 3, Zoe Saldana stated that even though she is bidding goodbye to the role, she would like Gamora to stay. She described Gamora as a major inspiration for all female MCU fans out there in an interview with GamesRadar+.
“The one thing I would not want is for Gamora to go away. She’s been such an impactful character for fans, and especially female fans, and young female fans. I would love for Marvel to figure out a way to find that next generation of actors that can incarnate these characters, and give them this immortality that fans generationally keep coming back to…”
Saldana expressed that she would feel happy if Gamora could stay in the universe and provide inspiration to the next generation as well. It is no lie that the Neytiri fame had to spend several hours of a tiresome makeup schedule to play the green-skinned character. It would be interesting to find out if Saldana agrees to helm the role again or if Marvel can find another face.
