The DC Extended Universe started out with too many flaws. Warner Brothers kept pushing the directors to make the movies in line with Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. The formulaic, family based superhero entertainment genre was applicable for the Marvel superheroes because it was their forte. The DCEU had its strongest suites in other aspects. It excelled in the R-Rated department. With its distinctive penchant for gory, bloody violence and a dark and gritty setting, the holistic direction the DCEU took while taking its first baby steps during its conception blew right in front of Warner Brothers’ faces. James Gunn, who is directing The Suicide Squad, knows where the DCEU faltered. According to actor Joel Kinnaman, The Suicide Squad will be “Heavily R-Rated” because that’s where the DCEU is headed.
Kinnaman was recently roped in for an interview where he was asked a series of questions on the upcoming DC Suicide Squad reboot. Coming to the direction the The Suicide Squad might be taking, he had this to say:
“That movie is going to be insane,” Kinnaman said of The Suicide Squad in the interview. “The script is so funny. Every page of that script was funny, and every page made me laugh. James just has this command of that genre, but also over every aspect of comedy and even the marketing. He just understands the world so well, and since he wrote it, he really reinvents not just the concepts, but also the characters.
He continued, going on to add:
“For me, it was like I did my first comedy, but it’s like heavily R-rated,” Kinnaman said. “It was a real learning experience for me, too, because I’d never done a comedy in that way before. So I asked James to work with me and teach me this shit. And yeah, we had so much fun doing it. That movie is going to be a fucking monster. Honestly, even though I’m in it, I can’t wait to see it as a fan.”

The R-Rated direction is the way to go for the DC Extended Universe. With the global success of movie’s like Joker, Logan, and the Deadpool franchise, it has been proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that the R-Rating does not equate to less sales. It might limit the audience count but it can still rake in huge numbers at the Box Office for a movie studio. Disney and Marvel Studios rule the PG-13 arena. That’s where they carved their niche. Considering the mammoth size of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DCEU and Warner Brothers can never hope to compete with them in that segment.
The DCEU needed a new direction. It needed a segment that is yet to be populated by Marvel movies. And they found it within the R-Rated movies. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is headed in the right direction. It will be a fun-filled joy ride with plenty of blood and bones flying around. The Dark Comedy genre sounds about right for now. Joel Kinnaman reprises his role of Rick Flag from David Ayer’s 2016 movie of the same name. He is one of the few actors coming back for another Suicide Squad movie along with Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, and Jai Courtney’s Digger Harkness/Captain Boomerang.

The movie has been granted an official MPAA Rating. It seems like Kinnaman’s confident the tone of the movie would warrant it be given an R-Rating. The popularity of such movies has soared recently with DC releasing their own R-Rated ventures like Birds of Prey and Joker along with Fox’s Logan and Deadpool.
The Suicide Squad is set for release on the 6th of August, 2021.
