And, recently, Robert Downey Jr. has named the two most important films of his career. Surprisingly, the actor whose name has become synonymous with Tony Stark and Iron Man doesn’t value the 2008 blockbuster or even the critically acclaimed and financially successful Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) as highly as these two movies.

Robert Downey Jr. Thinks This Movie Is The Most Important Film Of His Career

As per a recent interview, Dolittle, which was written and directed by Stephen Gaghan and was based on the second Doctor Dolittle novel by Hugh Lofting, was one of the most important movies Robert Downey Jr. had worked on in the past twenty years. The 2020 movie received poor reviews and only has a 15% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The pandemic probably made most people forget about the star-studded movie, which only made $251.4 million worldwide on a reported $175 million budget.

Downey gives a convincing justification for why he picked this one as more important than some of his highly discussed movies. The infamous 2020 disaster was the first film he made after Tony Stark died in Avengers: Endgame, and it marked his first appearance other than Tony Stark since The Judge in 2014.

Dolittle was a two-and-a-half-year wound of squandered opportunity,” the actor added. “The stress it put on my missus as she rolled her sleeves up to her armpits to make it even serviceable enough to bring to market was shocking.

While the movie was deemed a flop at the box office and has a 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, Downey Jr. considered it a push toward his “reset of priorities.”

After that point — what’s that phrase? Never let a good crisis go to waste? — we had this reset of priorities and made some changes in who our closest business advisers were,” he shared.

Robert Downey Jr. considers This Box-office Hit As Just “Content

Robert Downey Jr. considers Avengers: Age of Ultron as “content,” in contrast to his 2011 follow-up Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which he claims isn’t “content.”  He labeled Sr., Downy Jr. as “a piece of content” as well.

Even a personal project such as the documentary Sr., which the actor described as “the most important thing that I ever commit to a data card on a camera,” is saddled with that label.

In his mind, Sr. is “content” because even though it was “so personal” to him, it’s still just something that a viewer “could have chosen to click on and watch or not.”

Downey Jr.’s dedication to his art and his unmatched talent for bringing characters to life have cemented his position in cinematic history from his early career setbacks to his triumphant climb as one of Hollywood’s most admired actors. Robert Downey Jr. continues to enchant audiences with his acting prowess, making a lasting impression on the world of film whether he’s donning a superhero suit or playing a troubled genius.

Downey Jr. next stars in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, where he plays Lewis Strauss opposite Cillian Murphy in the title role. The film arrives in cinemas on July 21, 2023.
