The Simpsons Hit and Run was one of those games you could spend countless hours playing and not get bored of. Such was the sheer enjoyment of the game and for the majority of fans, it still holds dear to this day.
Most kids of a certain generation will have been raised on watching The Simpsons, having parents who would stick it on the TV to distract their kids from causing chaos around the house. Or in my case, had a Dad who secretly enjoyed watching the show but didn’t want to admit it in front of Mum.
And when The Simpsons Hit and Run game launched in 2003, fans of The Simpsons TV show rushed out to get their hands on it. A more than worthy successor to The Simpsons: Road Rage game which launched in 2001, this was surprisingly the 22nd instalment in series of Simpsons games. And probably the most highly rated and loved by fans alike.
It was maybe no surprise that The Simpsons Hit and Run was such a success, due to it being hugely influenced by Grant Theft Auto, but set out in a cuter, less violent style of gameplay.
So what would a remake of The Simpsons Hit and Run look like?
Well fans, wonder no more as creator and Developer Reubs has finally completed his remake of the classic, from scratch! After a year of updates on his YouTube channel Reubs has taken the game as far as he intends to.
In his video finale Reubs goes over the missions he created for the game utilising Unreal Engine 5. He also goes on to discuss some of the processes involved with the creation and of the decisions he had to make with his vision of this remake.
Whilst this work will probably never see the light of day due to copyright and other concerns, it has attracted attention from original lead designer on The Simpsons Hit and Run game, Joe McGinn, who had this to say;
“I’m the lead designer on the original game. Amazing what you accomplished! Really gives a taste of what a full modern remaster could be. Impressive work!”
Looking over this video brings back so many great memories of this game and certainly it looks like Reubs has done The Simpsons Hit and Run justice with all the time and effort that he has put into this. But will his work be looked at and comments taken on board in any future remake? Who knows.
That being said, this game is pure and utter nostalgia and NEEDS a remake, sooner rather than later. If you think of some of the remakes of games we’ve had recently, The Simpsons Hit and Run should have been at the very front of the list. We see you Spyro the Dragon!
