One Piece is one of the longest-running anime. The anime has more than 1000 episodes and the manga is about to reach 1100 chapters. The popularity it has gained since 1999, is immense. With one of the strongest and largest fanbases, One Piece remains one of the best anime. The fans have seen the anime go from goofy animations to top-edge animations.
Recently, the main character of One Piece, Monkey D. Luffy unlocked his new potential which broke the internet. Apart from that, the fans were also waiting for One Piece Live Action Series, which aired on 31st August. It performed better than everyone’s expectation. But the death of a major character has left the fans upset.
One Piece Live Action Kills a Major Character
Taking into account the past live actions of other anime, One Piece, blew everyone’s mind. The character designs, and the way they deliver their speech, story, etc., were all well done. Roronoa Zoro vs. Dracule Mihawk was a fight to watch. But there were a few scenes like Helmeppo’s naked butt, which were a bit unnecessary. It was a typical Netflix scene. But even after such an amazing performance, one particular scene, could not be accepted by the fans.
One Piece Live Action killed Merry in its first season. Merry was the servant of Kaya. Kaya lived in Syrup Village and was Usopp’s friend. She was always sick to Merry was there to look after him. Merry being killed has left the fans speechless. He was not supposed to die. Captain Kuro posed as Kaya’s bulter Klahadore. He wanted to take Kaya’s possessions, as she was rich.
In the anime, during the Syrup Village arc, Captain Kuro did fatally injure Merry, but he did not die. But in the live-action, he was killed almost instantly after Captain Kuro attacked him in the third episode. After 1000+ episodes, fans might not remember him, but the live-action is still in its initial stage. So people might get confused to see him getting killed.
Merry’s Death Is a Transition From the Anime
The live-action showed that Merry was killed by Captain Kuro, but in the anime, he survived after being fatally wounded. Kaya looked after Merry and took care of him. Later, when he became fit, he became her butler and took care of her. Kaya being an orphan, Merry was the only close one she had left. Now there is no one to look after that sickly girl.
Fans have raised their voice on this issue. But few believe that this scene proved that the live action is not afraid to take drastic steps. The sacrifice of Pell in the Alabasta arc was so emotional, yet later he was revealed to have lived. Few fans think that Netflix might eventually kill Pell, too to make it more appealing.
At the end of the day, One Piece Live Action can be considered a hit series. Inaki Godoy (Monkey D. Luffy), Mackenyu Maeda (Roronoa Zoro), Emily Rudd (Nami), Jacob Romero Gibson (Usopp), and Taz Skylar portray the characters beautifully. But from the perspective of the anime fan, Kaya is now completely alone, and if she falls sick, he might die.
