Even though there have been multiple A-listers, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Henry Cavill, who have portrayed Sherlock Holmes onscreen, since RDJ departed from the role, there hasn’t been a movie with the detective at its forefront. But it appears that after over a decade, the sequel to the 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows may finally see the end of the tunnel.
But it seems that despite fans’ admiration for Robert Downey Jr’s depiction of the detective, they are convinced that Henry Cavill is the most deserving actor to lead the threequel in the future.
Fans demand the inclusion of Henry Cavill in Sherlock Holmes 3
Fans have been thriving for a new Sherlock Holmes movie for a while now, and with the recent update on the threequel of the Robert Downey Jr.-led movies, fans have been pretty outspoken about their want from the film. And it appears that even though fans adore Robert Downey Jr’s depiction of the character, they want Henry Cavill at the forefront.
Considering the brilliance of Cavill’s portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in Netflix’s Enola Holmes movies, it’s reasonable why fans are craving for Cavill’s inclusion in the threequel. But another prime reason is the axing of Cavill from both of his iconic roles, including Superman and Geralt of Rivia, and fans believe that Cavill is the deserving candidate to lead the threequel, instead of RDJ.
Even though fans have been vocal about their desire to have Cavill as the lead in the Sherlock Holmes threequel, it appears that the movie won’t move forward without RDJ’s inclusion.
Sherlock Holmes 3 solely depends upon Robert Downey Jr.
In a recent interview with Collider, 2009’s Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie provided an insight into the current state of the threequel. And even though he was initially removed from the production of the threequel, and Dexter Fletcher was attached to the project instead, the project kind of got lost in obscurity after the pandemic.
But Ritchie went on to express that the future of the threequel depends on Robert Downey Jr., and even though he himself isn’t currently attached to the project, he is willing to return if RDJ is ready. He stated,
“Well, honestly, I left this up to Robert [Downey Jr.]. So Robert wanted to be in charge of this. The ball’s in his court, so he’s in charge of the script, he’s in charge of the whole thing. I’ve moonwalked out of that until there’s a time for me to get involved.”
Even though fans have been vocal about Henry Cavill leading the Sherlock Holmes franchise forward, it’s kind of unlikely that he will replace RDJ in the future. But fans are still hopeful, as rumors have been floating around that Cavill is still in talks to star in the threequel alongside RDJ.
