The Conjuring franchise starring Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson has been a fairly consistent one in the realm of horror films. All three Conjuring films (The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2, and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) have been major moneymakers for Warner Bros. by crossing the $200 million mark worldwide with budgets under $50 million.
The franchise has since branched out into spinoffs and prequel films including the Annabelle series, The Curse of La Llorona, and The Nun series which were also massively profitable ventures for the studio. The franchise is gearing up for its next release in the form of The Nun II. The film like its predecessor is expected to do great numbers at the box office when it arrives in theatres on September 8, 2023.
How Much Does The Nun II Need to Make To Become a Hit?
An article by Screenrant gives a detailed description of the box office potential of The Nun II, its production budget, and how much it needs to earn to become a hit. According to them, the production budget of the film is estimated to be around $40 million (not counting its marketing and advertising costs). This is a regular pattern regarding the franchise as all of the films had modest budgets that have not crossed $50 million.
The Nun (2018) earned an impressive $365 million over its $22 million budget (according to Box Office Mojo). Thus the expectations from the second film are high and is expected to bring in large numbers similar to the first or even more. There is a normal rule in commercial Hollywood films of earning twice its production budget for a film to be deemed a hit. By taking an estimated overall budget of the film including the advertising and marketing costs, Screenrant puts The Nun II’s breakthrough line of becoming a hit at $100 million. This should be a comparatively easy task for the sequel due to the popularity of the franchise and the enormous success of the first film.
