The ordeal with sequels is that there’s always tremendous pressure surrounding their execution because the only way a sequel can truly establish a name for itself is by surpassing its predecessor. And that isn’t particularly facile to achieve, which is part of the reason why an Edge of Tomorrow sequel didn’t see the light of day and most likely never will.
Emily Blunt’s Apprehensions About Edge of Tomorrow 2
Distributed by Warner Bros. and helmed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow was an action flick that doubled as a sci-fi venture starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt along with the likes of Bill Paxton, Charlotte Riley, and Brendan Gleeson. A Village Roadshow Pictures production, the film grossed about $370 million at the global box office, which wasn’t a grand figure in the least, especially since it was propped up on a budget of $178 million.
But despite being received tepidly at the box office, the 2014 film ended up garnering significantly impressive feedback from the audience and critics. And that alone symbolized an accomplishment big enough for the movie to get the green light for a sequel in the spring of 2016. 7 years down the line though, fans have still not heard a thing about the second installment. But it looks like Blunt already sensed a potential shelving coming their way a couple of years ago.
While talking about the same in an interview with Howard Stern, the Jungle Cruise star admitted that both she and Cruise desperately wanted to come back for a sequel. But with an exorbitant budget along with numerous scheduling clashes, the 40-year-old British actress fretted that Edge of Tomorrow 2 would never make it to the big screens.
“We wanted to. Honestly, I think the movie’s too expensive. Yeah, I don’t know how we’re going to do it. I think that it’s hard to align everyone’s schedules. I would love it. Doug Liman would love it. Tom would love it. We’d all love to do it, but I think until we figure out what’s going on with the industry – honestly, I think we need to figure out what is the next road map for the kinds of films that people want to make.”
And Blunt’s fears weren’t unwarranted either, because, after all this time, the film’s screenwriter has finally confirmed that Edge of Tomorrow 2 is a no-go.
Christopher McQuarrie Breaks Silence on Edge of Tomorrow 2
Christopher McQuarrie, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker who’s collaborated with Cruise on multiple projects, including the cinematic masterpiece Top Gun: Maverick, recently revealed why Edge of Tomorrow 2 never made it past the ‘talks.’
A few days ago, a fan on Twitter asked McQuarrie if there were “more stories” left to narrate in “that universe” or if it was done and dusted for. The 54-year-old replied,
“There was an idea for another one. Not quite a sequel or prequel. An equal? Alas, for various reasons it never came together.”
While it’s not wholly surprising since Blunt sort of cushioned the blow for fans by warning them about the possibility beforehand, it’s still upsetting. Even McQuarrie believed they would’ve been able to release a sequel when he affirmed the audience of the same all those years ago by claiming that they’d been “working on it.” To be fair though, he also mentioned being clueless about “when or how it will happen” so he’s not to be blamed either. Perhaps, the odds weren’t in their favor.
Edge of Tomorrow can be streamed on Netflix.
