Matt Damon Didn’t Have Any Work For A Year

It was not unusual in the past to discover Damon starring in multiple films within a single year. However, as the film industry has evolved, studios have increasingly relied on high-budget productions that cater to a wider audience, impacting Damon’s opportunities.
During a Hot Ones interview, Matt Damon delved into his theory on how the decline in DVD sales and technological advancements played a pivotal role in enabling this transformation.
“So what happened was the DVD was a huge part of our business, of our revenue stream,” Damon said. “Technology has just made that obsolete, and so the movies that we used to make, you could afford to not make all of your money when it played in the theatre because you knew you had the DVD coming behind the release.”
The decline in DVD sales stood as a contributing factor among several others, prompting studios to lean towards more high-concept films.
The Martian Marked Matt Damon’s Return To Films
Damon’s quest for the perfect film came to fruition with the 2015 sci-fi masterpiece, The Martian. Portraying an astronaut marooned on Mars, struggling to return home, Damon found himself captivated by the opportunity. He revealed that the realm of truly innovative content had begun to shift towards television, prompting him to seize the chance to be a part of The Martian without hesitation.
Despite harboring slight reservations due to his prior involvement in a somewhat similar film, Damon’s concerns were assuaged by the director of The Martian.
“So I went into meet [Ridley Scott], and then that was the thing that happened really quickly because I went in to have this meeting [with] him,” Damon recalled. “The first thing I said was, ‘My only hesitation is, I love this script, but I just did Interstellar and I played a dude who like was stranded on a planet by himself, and it might be weird if I take a year and a half off and then play a dude stranded on a planet.’ And I explained the movie to him and he was like, ‘The movies are totally f***ing different.'”
