Among major hype and terrible controversy, Iman Vellani’s The Marvels trailer dropped a few days ago. With that, came the question if it is time for Vellani’s Ms. Marvel to take the top dog tag away from Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel. A majority of fans have always been a little put off by Brie Larson’s portrayal of Carol Danvers. Which actually seems more a fault of the studio’s rare gap in storytelling than anything else.
According to experts, with the movie being released smack-bam in between Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, it did not get enough time to establish its own legacy. On the other hand, Marvel’s latest addition to the MCU, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel turned out to be one of their most appreciated series ever. With the new superhero winning hearts left and right, fans are wondering if she would turn out to be what Marvel initially wanted to achieve with Carol Danvers, aka, Captain Marvel.
Captain Marvel and Ms. Marvel’s Epic MCU Journey
Brie Larson‘s Carol Danvers story started with her being thrown in the middle of two warring alien races, with no memory to guide her path. Although she eventually turned out to be certifiably Marvel’s strongest, who could arguably take on the likes of Superman and even possibly win, there was something major missing from her story that kind of alienated her from the audience. This major factor, however, is nothing other than a connection or relativeness that has helped Marvel fans familiarize themselves with the world-saving Avengers for so many years.
In fact, being released between what turned out to be Marvel’s highest-grossing movies in history, to a lot of fans, her character seemed like nothing but plot armor for her eventual appearance and overpowering Thanos all by herself in Avengers: Endgame. As such, even with grossing $1 billion from the box office and tremendous critical appraisal, she could not reach the fans’ hearts. Iman Vellani’s Kamala Khan, on the other hand, is a regular high school kid with outlandish dreams and the generic trait of never fitting in.
Until one day, she realizes that she too has superpowers much like her idol, who is none other than Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel herself. This age-old story, told in the correct way and with enough time to delve into conflicts and convictions which are entirely her, helped people relate to her a lot more. Not only that but being a young girl with dreams, the character gave Vellani enough space to explore and showcase her tremendous acting capabilities. This inevitably charmed the audience to no end, making her an immediate fan favorite.

Iman Vellani to take over Brie Larson’s spotlight?
Being two of Marvel’s only women superheroes with solo projects currently on the horizon, it is inevitable for Vellani and Larson to be compared from a fans’ perspective. As such, it is no wonder that some are striving for Vellani to become the next big thing in the MCU. From praising Marvel’s newest sweetheart’s acting skills to stating how emotional she must be with this being her debut on the big screen, it seems fans cannot wait for The Marvels to arrive anymore.
Even with the resurfaced controversy surrounding actor Mohan Kapur, whose blatant presence in the trailer enraged the fans to no end, the hype around Iman Vellani right now is very evident. Fans are losing their minds over Vellani’s big-screen debut much like they would over someone dear to them in real life.
It will be interesting to see whether Iman Vellani does manage to establish this as her first stepping stone to making her own franchise as one of the biggest in Hollywood, or the Oscar winner Brie Larson can turn the tides in her favor, with what is turning out to be one of the most hyped movies this year. Rest aside, one thing that can be said for sure is fans cannot wait to witness it for themselves this winter.
The Marvels is expected to be released on November 10th, 2023.
