Marvel Studios Forgot The One Lesson Robert Downey Jr.'s $623M Movie Taught Them That Led To Their Downfall

The Marvel Studios is undeniably one of the greatest and wealthiest studios of all time ever since its inception. With its spectacular movies that became box-office giants with their immense worldwide grossing, the studios seemed to have nothing to lose as it made its way into becoming one of the best films and series producers in the entertainment industry.

Yet now it seems that they are losing their way considering the recent epic flops from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. One reason behind their downfall is forgetting the one major lesson that Robert Downey Jr.’s $623 million movie taught them.

Going back in time, Marvel Studios wasn’t always as famous as is today. And its success story isn’t an inevitable one either. However, after all the hardships, it finally reached the position it deserved in the entertainment industry, only to come to an abrupt halt when Robert Downey Jr.‘s $623 million movie taught them a crucial lesson.

In 2008, when Iron Man was released, it turned out to be an unexpected hit. This encouraged the makers to rush a sequel for the smasher. However, this time, it ended up in nothing less than a messy disaster, judging from 2010’s Iron Man 2‘s reviews. As per The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe via CBR,

“[Iron Man 2’s] critical response did give the studio pause. Especially as the desire to fast-track Iron Man 2 had come from Marvel Entertainment in New York. The lesson Marvel Studios took from their first sequel experience was simple but vital: Above everything else, always make sure there is a good creative reason to make a sequel.”

Though MCU has learned the lesson of not fast-tracking sequels after Iron Man 2, however, they still ended up repeating the same mistake with mindless sequels in the later years.

Marvel Studio’s Forgetting Of This Lesson Has Led To Its Downfall

Although Marvel Studios still holds the position of being one of the most dominant forces in the entertainment industry, it doesn’t feel the same, considering how they are gradually heading toward a fall following their most recent disasters. One reason behind this is that they are still repeating the same mistakes despite learning their lesson from Iron Man 2.

While they did stay on track for a little while in the middle keeping Captain America: The Winter Soldier in mind, it seems that now MCU has deviated once again. Over eight years after the Iron Man sequel, the studios have once again gone back to making disastrous sequels like Thor: Love and Thunder, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Now, it seems that nothing can stop Marvel from heading toward its downfall apart from correcting its previous mistakes and once again making its movies feel connected again. One other boost could be given by a clearer concept of the multiverse, though for that, they will have to do much better than Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Apart from this, fans will just have to wait and see if the makers are truly able to save the studios and bring them back on track with the upcoming Phase Five and Phase Six scheduled movies.
