Since its first announcement back in November, HBO seems to be ramping up the production of The Last of Us series based on the critically acclaimed video-game released back in 2013. Developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us rose to meteoric fame and set a benchmark for the action-adventure genre. The critical reception of the game led to the release of a sequel in June 2020. After reports of Mahershala Ali being offered the role of Joel in the upcoming series emerged, the series has officially found its Ellie in Game of Thrones alumnus Bella Ramsey.

As confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, HBO’s The Last of Us has officially cast Bella Ramsey, who rose to global fame for her iconic performance of Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, as Ellie. In the game, Ellie is a fourteen-year-old girl who is taken under Joel’s care to survive in a harsh, post-apocalyptic United States filled with hostile survivors and cannibalistic mutants left in the wake of a viral infection. Bella Ramsey has also starred in the fantasy drama television series His Dark Materials based on Philip Pullman’s novel series of the same name.

The relationship of Joel and Ellie has been a central theme of The Last of Us. As a fourteen-year-old girl, Ellie was born in the post-apocalyptic world and has only witnessed brutality, death, and suffering. Joel, who lost his daughter at the beginning of the game, is a hardened man who has shed most of his morality to survive in the unforgiving world. Reluctant to take Ellie under his protection, Joel gradually starts to resemble his former self having found a daughter in Ellie.

Bella Ramsey might not have a long acting career, but her limited performances have been widely acclaimed by fans and critics. Since her first appearance as Lyanna Mormont in Game of Thrones, she became an instant fan-favorite. Her ability to play fearless, hardened, and strong characters with the ability to inspire make her a perfect choice to play the role of Ellie.
