Not many games that attain worldwide popularity are made into movies, or even can be, for the matter. Take the Counter-Strike franchise, for example. The insanely successful first-person shooter doesn’t feature directed storylines to make into movies. A case can be made for the Call of Duty franchise, which features several iconic characters across game titles and storylines. In fact, Beyond the Call to Duty (2016) tries to work on a similar theme, and does so respectably enough.
The post-apocalyptic theme has been a recurrent one for not only games – Last Day on Earth on Android – but also for movies and TV series, with the Netflix web series Daybreak (2019) coming to mind in the genre. But what The Last of Us (2023) brings to viewers is an actual movie adaptation of the PlayStation game by the same name. The first season of the HBO Max show was a huge success, and there seems to be encouraging news for the fans.
Future seasons of The Last of Us confirmed after S1 success
Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are the creatives responsible for the prestigious HBO title making it to production. Their portrayal of the lead Joel as he smuggles a girl Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States received critical appraisal from fans around the world. Druckmann confirmed there will be multiple seasons to cover the material of the second part of the game in the show eventually.

In an interaction with GQ magazine, Druckmann spoke at length about the show.
“It’s more than one season… You have noted correctly that we will not say how many. But more than one is factually correct.” said the creative, choosing to not go into specifics.
When asked whether some negative response the game had received would affect the show or not, Druckmann was confident about their chances.
“How they react is how they react, that is completely outside of our control,” Druckmann said. “So how do we make the best TV show version of that story? That’s the problem that we wrestle with every day.” said the creative.
It is safe to say that neither the game nor the TV series will be likely to disappoint fans.
The Last of Us is as captivating as a TV series as the game it is based on
The Last of Us, the TV show, shows viewers two primary characters in Joel (Pedro Pascal), an apocalypse survivor, and 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey), the girl Joel smuggles across the United States ravaged with zombie-like creatures, cannibalistic creatures, and hostile survivors. Joel is nowhere close to doing some of the near-superhuman acts his videogame character can pull off, but still lends credibility to his character with the help of some tenacious acting by Pascal.
The eponymous game requires players to survive in a third-person open world, primarily as Joel and sometimes as Ellie and other characters, engaging in a variety of fighting, crafting, stealth, and tactical techniques in order to survive. Players can choose from a variety of guns, melee weapons, hand-to-hand combat, and even incendiaries like Molotov cocktails to fight off the zombie-like creatures infested with fungi, cannibals, or other hostile survivors. The game makes for a heady mix of fighting and survival and keeps players hooked for a long time in a huge landscape.
The Last of Us is currently streaming on HBO Max.
