The Flash Showrunner Eric Wallace Wanted Just 1 More Episode to Wrap Legends of Tomorrow But The CW Didn't Allow Him: "That was no longer possible"

The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace recently spoke about his disappointment over not being able to wrap up the cliffhanger ending of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow in the final season of The Flash. In an interview with The Nerds of Color, Wallace revealed his original plans to include at least one more episode in the ninth and final season of The Flash that would resolve the Legends of Tomorrow storyline.

However, the reduction of the final season from 20 episodes to 13 episodes made this no longer possible.

“There was originally — when I had hoped that we’d [have] 20 episodes — but my original concept was to have at least one [episode] — if not a two-parter — that wrapped up Legends of Tomorrow and you know, there [would] be a little crossover. We get them back, we get them out of time jail, all these good things, Booster Gold, etc, etc. When we found out we only have 13 episodes, that was no longer possible.”

Despite the disappointment, Wallace promised that The Flash will still address its own dangling plot threads, including some dating back to Season 1.

The showrunner also confirmed that the final season of The Flash will be a celebration of the relationship between Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, and Iris West-Allen, played by Candice Patton. Wallace said,

“I think there’s only one or two moments in the season where [Barry and Iris are] not together that [I] was very conscious of in the writing, we barely have enough time to wrap up things with Barry and Iris’ upcoming family let alone who is Danielle Panabaker playing now, so there wasn’t enough time.”

In addition to the focus on the relationship between Barry and Iris, Stephen Amell will return as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow in The Flash Season 9.

However, Wallace reassured fans that Oliver’s appearance won’t undermine his heroic act of self-sacrifice in Arrow Season 8, Episode 8, Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part Four and its aftermath.

“We don’t change what has happened in the eight seasons of Arrow. We honor all of that.”

The Flash Season 9 premieres on The CW on Feb. 8 and fans are sure to be on the edge of their seats as they watch the final chapters of this beloved superhero series unfold.
