Following the release of the highly anticipated The Flash, the ending of the multiverse epic has left fans intrigued about DC’s future, which will be shaped by the duo of James Gunn and Peter Safran. But it seems before Henry Cavill was axed from the plans of DC’s new chapter, he was initially supposed to make an appearance in the film, which was long rumored after his return in Black Adam.
With The Flash now finally running in theatres, a report from The Hollywood Reporter has clarified the situation regarding Cavill’s intended cameo and how it would’ve played out in the bigger picture.
Spoilers ahead
The original ending for The Flash involved Henry Cavill
Although the original ending involved us getting to see Ezra Miller interact with George Clooney’s Bruce Wayne, who is known for Batman & Robin, it wasn’t the originally planned ending. According to reports, The Flash‘s ending comprised three different courthouse scenarios and one of them involved Henry Cavill. Before James Gunn and Peter Safran were handed the keys to the DC universe, who eventually scrapped the DCEU to make room for DCU, the ending reportedly involved Cavill being joined by Gal Gadot, Sasha Calle, and Michael Keaton.
This scenario might have ended up leading to Cavill starring in a Man of Steel sequel, followed by a Wonder Woman 3 with Gal Gadot at its forefront, and most probably a Keaton-led Batman film. But considering the DCEU was on a slow spiral death since BVS, James Gunn and Peter Safran took the initiative to scrap this universe and make way for the new one.
James Gunn confirms the first DCU character
With still a few projects remaining in the DC slate that is tied with the previous regime, James Gunn recently clarified one of these films’ places in the new universe. Reflecting on the Xolo Maridueña-led Blue Beetle, which is the next DC project in line after The Flash, Gunn clarified the character being part of the new DCU. Although he did say Superman: Legacy will be the first major DCU film, the character of Blue Beetle will the first character of DCU. He explained,
“I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is Superman: [Legacy],”
Even though it would’ve been intriguing to witness Henry Cavill’s Superman making a cameo in The Flash, in the grand scheme of things, a fresh start was the required step for the DC universe.
The Flash is currently running in theatres.
