Ezra Miller’s The Flash has already astounded the audience at its first screening a few days ago. With people allegedly being moved enough to end up crying by the end of the movie because they sympathized with Miller’s character, it is off to a great start. In fact, director Andy Muschietti claimed they might also be cooking a plan for a sequel as long as the audience response is positive when the movie finally releases.
That is something people are still waiting to see, as even up until a few months ago people were rallying for Miller to be replaced in The Flash due to the actor’s series of public scandals over the last couple of years. Interestingly, the movie’s production designer made quite an odd comment over this discourse that is making people a little uncomfortable at the very least.
Paul Austerberry recalls making The Flash
Paul Austerberry is a well-known name in Hollywood for being a master at his craft. From The Shape of Water to It Chapter Two, he has helped bring a lot of stories to life through his masterful production designing skills. Talking about his work in The Flash, in a recent interview with CBC News, he explained what a huge deal this movie is for all of them, considering it took around $220 million to make the film.
He explained, “We’re designing these things and designing the film for the big screen; this is a big screen, movie-going experience.” And so, he added, he hopes most people will go watch it in the cinemas, as, “It’s made for the big spectacle.”
Talking about being involved in bringing back Michael Keaton’s iconic Batcave and Batwing for this movie, he shared that he once made full-size cardboard replicas of The Dark Knight‘s vehicles.
However, it still surprised him that he was “able to actually do the real deal.” And since his job requires so much hard work, dedication, and attention to detail, it feels great to see that paying off. He noted, “From my profession and what I do, it’s fantastic that these films are being made because…we can create whatever we want in the world.”
Fortunately for him, with the overwhelming reception The Flash gained during the premiere even with its unfinished version, it seems that the movie is progressing on the right track.
Paul Austerberry claims people will forget Ezra Miller’s scandals
In a recent interview with CBC News, Paul Austerberry, The Flash’s production designer claimed that people will completely forget about Ezra Miller‘s past wrongdoings the moment the movie starts playing on the big screen. He noted, “People will forget that.” And people are not taking this very well, as not only did it sound extremely ignorant but it also made him look careless about such sensitive topics.
Especially as Miller themself have apologized for their behavior last August and is seeking help from a professional for their mental health issues. However, Hollywood had always been notorious for this mindset, so his blatant ignorance is not exactly surprising. Some are also claiming that Ezra Miller suddenly being praised from all directions could be a way of trying to make people give the movie a chance.
Especially after the response the movie gained during its screening in CinemaCon, from the director Andy Muschietti, who claimed Miller to be one of the greatest actors he has ever worked with, Miller’s co-star in the movie Michael Shannon called them lovely and kind, prominent figures are speaking up in favor of the actor.
And with news of plans of a sequel already being drafted, it very well could be a way to sway the public in their favor. However, only time will tell if their acting performance can be enough for people to forget the serious accusations they have faced and even been detained for. But rest assured, with the hype the movie is getting, people are waiting to witness it for themselves when it releases in June.
The Flash hits the theaters on June 16th, 2023.
