The Flash, starring the ever-controversial Ezra Miller in the titular role, is the most-awaited summer blockbuster of 2023. Already being hailed as one of the greatest superhero movies at the CinemaCon, Miller’s upcoming standalone film has garnered a bit of controversy from some naysayers.
The internet is buzzing with a debate as some believe that the Andrés Muschietti-directed film is just a Michael Keaton vehicle. The statement has ignited backlash from those who ardently believe that the movie is a 100% Barry Allen story. But again, not having a Barry Allen cameo certainly raises brows.
The Flash Is, Perhaps, A 100% Barry Allen Story!
Ezra Miller‘s first standalone film, The Flash (2023) is being termed a “glorified Batman movie” by some naysayers, who are referring to the upcoming DC film as a Michael Keaton vehicle. After it was reported that Miller’s movie will not include Grant Gustin’s cameo, some fans were convinced that the movie holds a strong focus on Batman than the titular hero.
But again, some feel differently. One fan took to Twitter to address the criticism and expressed that the Andrés Muschietti-directed film, which has already garnered praise at the CinemaCon, is not a “glorified Batman movie”, but a “100% Barry Allen story”. He tweeted:
“Anyone who says The Flash is just a glorified Batman movie is wrong and completely in denial at this point.
It uses nostalgia correctly and doesn’t rely on fan service and memberberries. This is 100% Barry Allen’s story, with Batman and Supergirl as icing on the cake. Period.”
Others came forward to support the thought. One fan mentioned, “Flash is much more than superspeed.” Another wrote, “People are judging a film they haven’t seen.” Some curious minds, however, questioned the number of post-credit scenes in the film. Well, hang in there! Here are some of the tweets:
A Strong Comic Storyline, But Multiple Inclusion of Batman Actors
While The Flash might have loosely adopted the 2011 comic storyline Flashpoint, the upcoming movie’s inclusion of multiple Batman actors and only one for The Flash made fans question that the movie doesn’t hold a strong focus on the titular character’s history. And then, it’s Michael Keaton’s nostalgic return in the Batman suit that got everyone framing opinion.
Having said that, it’s too early to judge a film, considering the kind of praises it garnered at ComicCon, after film insider, Matt Ramos, referred to it as the “greatest superhero movie ever”. Even though this might sound like an exaggeration, James Gunn and Tom Cruise are some of the others who showered multiple praises over the movie’s storyline.
Not only this, but the movie’s Oscar-winning production designer, Paul Austerberry, who is the man behind several DC hits, expressed the work that underwent into making this movie, humbly calling it greater than del Toro’s Oscar-winning Shape of Water. The movie may be promising but eliminating Grant Gustin’s (who plays Barry Allen in the series) cameo is rather heartbreaking.
The Flash hits theatres on June 16, 2023.
