Director Mike Hodges expressed his surprise at Caine accepting to do this film. Caine, who elaborated on his reasons for playing the character, was taken in by the relatability factor of the protagonist.
“One of the reasons I wanted to make that picture was my background. In English movies, gangsters were either stupid or funny. I wanted to show that they’re neither. Gangsters are not stupid, and they’re certainly not very funny… Carter is the dead-end product of my own environment, my childhood; I know him well. He is the ghost of Michael Caine.

Michael Caine’s Next Film Is The Great Escaper
Veteran actor Michael Caine’s age has not deterred him from doing what he loves. The nonagenarian is set to regale audiences once again with his next film titled The Great Escaper. The film, directed by BAFTA nominee Oliver Parker, tells the true story of how Bernard Jordan, a man in his 80s, escaped from his care home in 2014 to attend the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landings in France. The Academy Award winner will be starring alongside Glenda Jackson, marking the pair’s first acting project together in nearly 50 years since 1975’s The Romantic Englishwoman.
According to reports, the entire filming was done in England to ensure that the older cast comprising Caine and Jackson were able to complete their schedules without too much physical effort. The Great Escaper is due to release in the UK sometime in October 2023.
