The fifth season of the historical drama series, The Crown is just a few days away from airing on Netflix, and early reviews are labeling the new season as one of the most terrible ones so far.
The show, written by the famous British screenwriter, Peter Morgan, and produced by Andrew Eaton, was first released back in 2016 and has been depicting an embellished version of what went on in the life of Queen Elizabeth II ever since.
With four seasons already out and thriving on Netflix, the show is now set to release season 5 in some days, but it turns out critics are utterly disappointed in the upcoming season as they claim it to be barely sub-par and nowhere nearly as good as the previous seasons.
Early reviewers claim season 5 of The Crown is trashy
The first two seasons of the series starred Claire Foy as the Queen with Matt Smith playing the role of Prince Philip alongside the British actress. Whereas in the third and fourth seasons, the Academy Award-winning English actress Olivia Colman played the character of the famous monarch ias Tobias Menzies portrayed the Prince. This way, The Crown narrates different aspects and instances of the Queen’s life with different actresses on board every two seasons.
Season 5 of The Crown is going to feature the Vera Drake actress Imelda Staunton taking over the throne as Queen Elizabeth II with the show exploring various intriguing events that took place concerning the royal family during the ’90s.
However, early reviews about the upcoming season have painted the show in a rather dreadful light, as critics claim to have been not only unimpressed but underwhelmed as well. And it’s not so much about the brand-new casting, as much as it is about the plot and storyline of the season that has managed to seriously sink the expectations of its viewers.
Critics bash The Crown season 5

Kayleigh Donaldson from The Wrap compared instances from the script to that of a “Wikipedia entry.”
“Its biggest weaknesses continue to be moments of clunky exposition to explain historical details or side characters for American viewers and non-royal buffs. Names and tidbits are shoved into conversation with the subtlety of a Wikipedia entry.”

While IndiWire’s Ben Travers talked about the restricted perspective about the royal family that season 5 apparently had to offer.
“Despite scripts that toil through the pulpy details of a very public divorce, strong design work on every level, and enlivening portrayals from the fresh ensemble (Lesley Manville is so good in her criminally truncated time as Princess Margaret), “The Crown” Season 5 suffers from a narrowed point of view.”
With Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Dominic West playing the character of Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki representing Princess Diana in the latest season of The Crown, the show has been earning rather harsh critical reviews with season 5 mere days away from its release.
Now all that’s left is the vote of the audience.
