Variety has reported that the 80-year-old filmmaker, Martin Scorsese recently met with Pope Francis during his post-Cannes tour of Italy. After meeting the Pope, it has been reported by multiple outlets that he is planning to make a film about Jesus.

The filmmaker announced on Saturday during a Rome conference at the Vatican,

“I have responded to the Pope’s appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus.”

He also hinted that the newly announced project could be the next film he might work on. “And I’m about to start making it.”

Antonio Spadaro, editor of the Jesuit publication La Civiltà Cattolica said on the publication’s website that the filmmaker stated, “How the Holy Father’s appeal ‘to let us see Jesus’ moved him.” 

Their announcement at the conference came after he along with his wife, Helen Morris met Catholic Church’s head during a brief private audience at the Vatican.

While the filmmaker and some of the fans are excited to see their favorite director helming another project, another fraction is having different opinions on it. Some of them have already made up their mind that Scorsese’s reportedly-new film is going to be a sequel but with a small twist.

While fans’ are having mixed reactions to the new announcement, this project came after Mel Gibson’s sequel to the 2004 film, Passion of the Christ which is to be titled Resurrection. The film has been garnering much attention especially when the first film was highly controversial due to antisemitism charges. Given the attention, it is yet to witness whether the upcoming film would leave a positive impression on the audience or not.
