The culmination period of DC Extended Universe isn’t going very well under the leadership of James Gunn, with both The Flash and Blue Beetle bombing at the box office this summer.

However, the performances of these relatively low-profile movies haven’t deterred DC fans’ excitement for Gunn’s plans for the revamped DC Universe.

Among the 10 projects Gunn and DC Studios’ co-CEO Peter Safran announced in January, Superman: Legacy and The Batman 2 have so far grabbed the most headlines because of their respective legacies. In the last few hours, the latter has generated plenty of posts on X thanks to an interesting speculation concerning the entry of a very popular villain.

Latest Update on Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2

With the production of The Batman 2 yet to be started, there’s little concrete information available surrounding the storyline and side characters. Still, two major things are already confirmed in the public domain.

Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman (2022)
Robert Pattinson as Batman in The Batman (2022).

One is that Robert Pattinson will lead the movie in the titular role of Bruce Wayne and will be supported by Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth.

Second is that The Batman 2 will be the continuation of Matt Reeves’ The Batman (2022). This means the story of the hero in the black cape will not align with Gunn’s DC Universe’s movies and TV shows and exist in its own universe. There’s no formal update on Batman’s opponent despite Barry Keoghan‘s cameo as Joker at the end of the first movie which made $771 million at the box office.

But as is the case with such high-profile projects, the rumor mill is in full swing all the time and things will only intensify once the production kicks off.

In that regard, noted scooper MyTimeToShineHello has brought forth two key updates. The X user starts by claiming the movie will begin to film in March of 2024. However, it’s the second sentence of the report that has really excited fans on social media. It’s reported that Clayface will be involved in the movie.

Who Is Clayface? The Supervillain Rumored to Be in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman 2

The suggestions of Clayface’s entry into the live-action world are purely speculative at the moment. Having said that, the idea of the supervillain joining Reeves’ Batman universe is certainly interesting; after all, he’s virtually indestructible and one of the most feared adversaries of Batman.

Most popularly seen in Batman: The Animated Series, Clayface/Matt Hagen is a shape-shifting creature made of clay. It was developed by Batman creators Bill Finger and Bob Kane, with its origin story linked to Basil Karlo, a B-list actor. Matt is the second Clayface brought to the fore by Finger and Sheldon Moldoff.

Fans have been waiting a long time to see Clayface join the live-action world. Considering how bold Gunn and Safran have been with their recent decisions at DC Studios, perhaps it’s the perfect time to make another daring move.

For now, though, it’s best to hold your horses and wait for more concrete updates before getting excited!
