James Gunn is moving ahead with the new DCU along with the DC Elseworlds, which includes projects like the Joker sequel and The Batman 2. The films are under development and are set to release in 2024 and 2025, respectively. And fans are excited for Robert Pattinson’s return as the Dark Knight in the sequel to the 2022 Matt Reeves film. Earlier reports have claimed that Barry Keoghan’s Joker could have a more potential arc in the sequel putting him against the superhero.
And there might be a possibility he could have someone else by his side. Deadline has recently reported that DC villain Clayface could also have a potential role in the Batman sequel featuring Robert Pattinson.
Clayface May Reportedly Appear in The Batman 2
According to Deadline, Mike Flanagan pitched an idea about a live-action film following the DC supervillain Clayface. The reports claimed that the Doctor Sleep director approached James Gunn and Peter Safran, but they did not mean for the movie or the character to exist in DC Elseworlds.
Other sources also claimed that Clayface could have a significant role in The Batman 2, but nothing is confirmed yet, as the script is constantly changing. While nothing has been said about a live-action Clayface film, it is believed that the film and the character could probably set a connection between DCU and DC Elseworlds.
Flanagan has had a Clayface movie on his wishlist for a while. Earlier in 2021, he shared a tweet, saying that he has always wanted to do a Superman film, but he would also love to work on a standalone Clayface movie. And seems like it could finally happen in James Gunn’s first chapter of the DCU, Gods, and Monsters.
Who is the Shapeshifting Villain, Clayface?
Introduced in Detective Comics #40 in 1940, Clayface was an identity adapted by a B-list actor based on a character he portrayed in a horror film and became a frequent adversary of Batman. He has a body that seems to be made out of clay and has shape-shifting abilities.
The identity is also adapted by several other DC supervillains. Clayface has made numerous appearances over the years from comic books to video games. And multiple actors have already donned the character on the screen, including Kirk Baltz portrayed the DC villain in Birds of Prey, and Brian McManamon in Gotham.
He has been one of Batman’s prominent foes and is also among those who are yet to make a live-action incarnation in a Batman film. Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 could finally introduce the live-action Clayface alongside Robert Pattinson’s Batman.
However, the script is constantly changing, and nothing can be confirmed until the studio’s official confirmation. Filming for The Batman sequel is expected to start in November this year.
The Batman 2 will release on October 3, 2025.
