Tom Cruise’s romantic interests have been a subject of vetted interest for the public just as much as his achievements in Hollywood. The man whose reputation precedes him, as well as the legends that make him stand out in the industry, has rarely ever failed when it comes to mastering any hurdle placed in front of him – be it jumping off of buildings, clutching onto the side of a Boeing as it takes off into the air, performing H.A.L.O. jumps, flying an F-18 fighter jet, or riding a motorcycle off a cliff (with a parachute, of course, the producers aren’t that crazy).
However, when it comes to marriages, it suffices to say that a blissful union, let alone a happily ever after, has not been on the charts for this multi-talented, hyperactive, and megastar personality.
Tom Cruise Had Eyes On Sofia Vergara in the Early 2000s
The mystery of Tom Cruise and his devoted conviction in the faith of Scientology is a puzzle beyond the powers of being solved by the human mind – at least, not without the resources, tools, and unbarred access to the inner workings of the controversial religion and its Church. What little facts exist outside the heavily guarded and protected walls of the institution only paint Scientology in a bad light, including its intensive involvement in each of Cruise’s personal relationships.
In the early 2000s, after Tom Cruise’s high-profile divorce from Nicole Kidman and his failed relationship with Penelope Cruz, the Church once again got involved in branding his image as a successful man, off-screen and in love. As such, hundreds of interviews were conducted by Shelley Miscavige, the wife of the institution’s leader, David Miscavige. Cruise, however, had his own plans.
According to an investigative report published by Vanity Fair, the star had his eyes set on Modern Family star Sofia Vergara and asked his close friend, Will Smith to introduce them at a pre-Oscars party. In an interview with the New York Post, Tom Cruise’s biographer, Andrew Morton claimed:
“She was dazzled by Tom’s megawatt smile and amused by the blizzard of phone calls, flowers, and chocolates that followed their first meeting.”
However, Vergara was not easy to impress, mostly because she was being asked to convert from Catholicism to Scientology. This pulled back the curtains for her as she was reported to quickly walk away from the situation before it progressed any further. As reported by an insider, “She was fundamentally terrified of Scientology. She sincerely believed that she would be struck down by God and burn in hell if she joined.”
Tom Cruise Faces the Aftermath of Failed Relationships Alone
Despite Scientology’s hands-on involvement in his relationships, Tom Cruise remains singularly single since his divorce from Katie Holmes. After a hectic few decades of dating and being married to 3 women – Mimi Rogers (1987-90), Nicole Kidman (1990-2001), and Katie Holmes (2006-12) – Cruise has directed his complete and unwavering attention to films and Hollywood, insomuch that he has been credited with singlehandedly saving theatrical distribution business, as in bringing the thrill of the theatres back for the audience in an era dominated by streaming.
Despite being linked to a handful of high-profile relationships, including Marvel star Hayley Atwell, all of Cruise’s relationships have been transitory. The actor is currently focusing on his upcoming premieres, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Part Two on 12 July 2023 and 2024 respectively.
