Popularly known for his action films, Tom Cruise is loved by his fans and his co-stars. Many Hollywood stars have shared their praise for the 60-year-old actor. And some still wish to star alongside the Mission Impossible actor. However, that was not the case for Emily Blunt, as the British actress once shared that she would rather feature in poorly paid theatres than star alongside Cruise.
However, she was unable to deny when the opportunity came in the form of the 2014 science fiction film, Edge of Tomorrow. And the Jungle Cruise star has shared that Cruise himself recruited her for the 2014 film after watching her work in The Adjustment Bureau.
Tom Cruise Favored Emily Blunt For Edge of Tomorrow
Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt starred together in the 2014 sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow. It features the two getting ready to save Earth from an alien invasion. Although the Mary Poppins Returns actress did not want to star alongside Cruise, he was the one who suggested her name for the 2014 film.
Not only did he suggest her name, but he was also adamant to get her in the film after seeing her work in the 2011 film The Adjustment Bureau. During an interview with Deadline, Blunt shared that one of the scenes of the 2011 film made Cruise realize he wanted Blunt to star in Edge of Tomorrow. “There was one scene in that where he was like, ‘That’s the girl,’” she recalled.
“It was when my character meets Matt Damon in the bathroom. Adjustment Bureau was different from the full-metal bit*h in Edge of Tomorrow.”
A Quiet Place star also mentioned that Cruise was open about how tough the filming for the 2014 movie would be. And he also motivated her to do her best when she was exhausted by the battle suits weighing 85 pounds during the filming.
Emily Blunt Knew Filming Edge of Tomorrow Wouldn’t Be Easy
Cruise made it clear to Emily Blunt that this film could be one of the hardest action movies she ever did. She shared that when she joined the meeting for the film, the Jack Reacher star clarified that it would be “really, really fu*king hard!” Blunt also admitted that the actors required athlete-like stamina to carry on “the sheer weight of those Ecto suits.”
After its release, the film received immense praise from the audience and critics. It landed a 91% critics score along with a 90% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, its performance at the box office was not as great as with critics. With an estimated budget of $178 million, Edge of Tomorrow only made $367 million worldwide.
Although it wasn’t that bad, the star cast of the film was expected to score much higher at the box office. The Looper actress was also disappointed with its box office performance.
Edge of Tomorrow is available to stream on HBO Max.
