Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock had been amazing friends ever since the two starred in the 2002 blockbuster Two Weeks Notice. Not only the movie remains one of the most appreciated and enjoyable movies of their careers, it turns out the filming was just as fun if not more so for them.
In fact, as reigning king and queen of rom-com, they had been in talks about working together for years at that time. And finally collaborating for this became a pleasant surprise for both of them. Turns out, though, this was not always the case.
Hugh Grant claimed that they allegedly met a few years prior to filming Two Weeks Notice to talk about a potential collaboration. However, Grant’s idea of breaking the ice with a story went so horribly wrong that Sandra Bullock stomped out and did not speak to him for three years.
Hugh Grant repulsed Sandra the first time they met
As mentioned, Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock were the royalties of rom-com in that era. After their masterful performances in Notting Hill and Practical Magic respectively, Hollywood tried to set them up together for work. As Hugh Grant noted in an interview back in 2003,
“We’d been dying to do something for ages, filmmaking-wise that is, I had been watching Sandy for years and thinking, ‘That’s the girl I should be doing films with.'”
As a result, a meeting was arranged for them to talk about potential collaborations. He explained, “We first met up about five years ago and had what Hollywood calls ‘a relationship meeting,’ where you talk about the possibility of working together.” However, things went horribly wrong in Grant’s attempt to start a potential friendship as,
“I told Sandy a very disgusting story, which I think revolted her, she left the room, and I didn’t hear from her for three years after that.”
Although the Extreme Measures star never elaborated on what exactly the story was that repulsed Sandra Bullock to completely ignore his existence for a while, thankfully they resolved their issues on the set of their $199 million movie.
Sandra Bullock pulled pranks on Hugh Grant
Although the beginning of their relationship was rocky, the two became fast friends while working together on their movie. In fact, they were so comfortable with each other that Bullock even pulled a few pranks on Hugh Grant.
As the Bird Box star admitted, “I might have called him at night and said, ‘Ah, we need your help, Hugh is in hospital.’ So you just need to be on your guard, but it’s the most fun to be his friend.” For his part, Grant too admitted how much he enjoys Bullock’s friendship, saying,
“She has that effect on me, that sort of friend one had at school with whom, you can’t look them in the eye because it makes you laugh.”
In fact, Grant claimed that they got along a little too well, “laughing so much” to the point that it sometimes ended up annoying even the filming crew. This amazing chemistry translated well on the big screen, turning their film into one of the most celebrated movies of 2002.
So even though they haven’t had the chance for another collaboration yet, fans are hopeful that they will see the two share the same screen again.
