Throughout the 90s, Tom Cruise, the global megastar, and his decade-long marriage to one of Hollywood’s brightest stars, Nicole Kidman was a phenomenon both talked about as well as a fascinating mystery because of the scale of stardom that encompassed the pair.
But as time wore off, the pair’s novelty did too, and by the turn of the 21st century, their marriage was already approaching the end of its tenure. The road that was traveled in the meantime was one marred by love, lust, tragedy, and adventure.
Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman’s Heart-breaking Tragedy
While the infamy surrounding the wedding of a 23-year-old and one of the world’s most famous bachelors was already a monumental one, the repercussions that were faced in the aftermath were even more grave. For one, Nicole Kidman later admitted to their relationship being founded on lust rather than love (even though they eventually found their way to it). Decades later, Kidman also admitted that her marriage to a star of Tom Cruise’s stature and power gave her a sense of security, especially since she was, at the time, a young woman trying to find her place in Hollywood.
Besides the obvious advantages that were parried via the union, Cruise and Kidman did not marry for convenience. Their obsessive attraction to each other was enough to give rom-com producers a run for their money. And yet, despite the happy union, a serious injury to their growing and evolving relationship was caused when Nicole Kidman suffered two miscarriages throughout her decade-long marriage to Tom Cruise.
Nicole Kidman Opens Up About Miscarriages
The Eyes Wide Shut actors have rarely ever opened up or spoken about their relationship with each other once Cruise and Kidman were divorced in 2001. In later interviews, the Mission: Impossible star was quick to lose his temper if asked about his past with Kidman and his relationship with his adopted children, Isabella and Connor.
But Nicole Kidman has been more welcoming of the media and public curiosity. She spoke about her experience with big outlets like Marie Claire in 2007 – “I had a miscarriage at the end of my marriage, but I had an ectopic pregnancy at the beginning of my marriage. It was incredibly traumatic for me. Sometimes you share your grief” – and in more detail in her cover issue interview with Tatler in 2018.
“I know the yearning. That yearning. It’s a huge, aching yearning. And the loss! The loss of a miscarriage is not talked about enough. That’s massive grief to certain women.”
Kidman has an ectopic pregnancy in 1990 at the age of 23 shortly after her marriage to Tom Cruise and a miscarriage in 2001, at the heels of the dissolution of their marriage. The Big Little Lies actor would then go on to marry Keith Urban with whom she welcomed two daughters, Sunday and Faith Urban.
