Bryan Callen revealed an improvised scene from Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker
Regarded among the most iconic superhero comic-based movies, it was a masterpiece by Warner Bros. Pictures. Comedian Bryan Callen talked about working with Joaquin Phoenix when he graced The Joe Rogan podcast. Callen was Phoenix’s co-star in the 2019 film. The actor shared that the Joker star loves to improvise scenes, and one of the scenes where he punches the clock was not in the script.
Callen said,
“He would just improvise and do crazy sh*t where you didn’t know if he was going to even hurt himself. Remember when he punches the clock that’s not in the script, he just punched that clock off the wall. Todd thought he broke his hand, that was not on the script.”
He also appreciated the actor for his unbelievable routine. Callen shared that Phoenix went from bulky 124 pounds to a skinny guy appearance in a short span.
“When he came I think to set he was a hundred and when he was walking around 180 pounds or something. I think Todd Phillip said something like I think the character should be kind of skinny, just kind of said it casually like, I think, and Joaquin showed up at 124 pounds. Then they were like let’s give you a nutritionist and everything else, and he said no, it’s okay. This guy’s got inhuman discipline, he just ate an apple and smoked cigarettes.”
The actor was widely appreciated for his dedication to the character.
Joaquin Phoenix on taking up the role of Joker
Joaquin Phoenix opened up on his reaction to playing the most remarkable role of his career, the character of Joker. The film was based on the character of Arthur Fleck, an undernourished, beaten-down, depressed, and smoking clown. He had a sick mom but wanted a rich fantasy life and to gain fame.
Speaking to Indie Wire, the actor said,
“That’s what made me feel I had to do it. I felt overwhelmed and terrified by it. Usually, when I’m scared of something, it makes me feel like I have to go towards it. I had so many mixed feelings about the character. And I like that. I don’t think we have enough of that in movies, particularly in a superhero genre movie. I hate the idea of labeling something, just mostly because I don’t really know what the genres are.”
The film was a box office superhit and grossed over $1 billion worldwide. It was the first R-rated film to cross $1 billion.
