“That was much more horrible”: Steven Spielberg Had to Delete One Terrifying Scene from His $476M Movie That Would’ve Left Audience Traumatized Forever

Steven Spielberg Had to Delete One Terrifying Scene from His $476M Movie That Would’ve Left Audience Traumatized Forever

Steven Spielberg has been very open about his regret for making one of his most successful movies. The director is well known throughout the industry for his incredible talent for filmmaking and for bringing out the beauty of a movie in the most delicate way possible. Despite his passion, he outdid himself in some scenes. It was to such an extent that he was even forced to remove it.

In his range of movies, the director has shown his skills ardently. However, one scene, in particular, got to him so badly that it even scared him. Even with the impact that the movie had, there was no possibility of that scene ever making it in the film. If it were up to Spielberg, he would undo Jaws altogether.

Steven Spielberg Did Not Hesitate Before Deleting One Scene From Jaws

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is action-packed and filled with violence and gore. The movie may have impacted the world in a negative way, but the success it got was breathtaking. Showing sharks the way that the movie did was unique and interesting. Unfortunately, it resulted in a rise of poachers; something Speilberg deeply regrets. However, one scene was so gruesome that the director knew he could not keep it.

“He was riding in the mouth of the shark like a maidenhead of a ship, toward the kid in the water, vomiting blood. That was much more horrible than anything else that came in the first third of the movie, so I took it out.”

The director’s original thought on the scene had been that it was too gory. It showed the stunt double being dragged across the ocean in a shark’s mouth; blood making the water around them red. It was too gory for the director and he was forced to take it out. The changed sequence just showed an unnamed individual’s leg sinking down after he was eaten by a shark.

Steven Spielberg Vouched For The Jaws Spoof

About the time when Jaws 2 was coming out, Joe Dante and Roger Corman’s Pirhana was also releasing. Universal wasn’t impressed by the scheduling and tried to interfere a lot, claiming that a rip-off of Jaws coming out right when its sequel is releasing is not a good idea. However, Steven Spielberg saw it differently.

“The second Jaws movie had come out right around the time of Piranha. Universal was very concerned and annoyed that Roger was putting out his rip-off of Jaws the same year that Jaws 2 was coming out and so they apparently threatened an injunction.”

According to the director, it was the perfect opportunity. Having a spoof, not a rip-off, coming out at the time when the sequel is also releasing is absolutely ideal. He saved the film. Coincidentally, Corman had no idea that Spielberg was the reason their movie could release in the first place.
