Samuel L Jackson has been seen in a plethora of roles throughout his career. Starring in actionable no-nonsense roles such as in Pulp Fiction to a romantic lover in The Hitman’s Bodyguard, the actor has proved himself to have a multitude of emotions on-screen.
Another iconic character that Jackson has portrayed over the years is the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although the character follows the no-nonsense rule of the actor, Jackson requested Kevin Feige one thing and he said yes. It was a dear wish of the Pulp Fiction actor to show Nick Fury as vulnerable and the MCU granted it.
Samuel L Jackson Wanted To Portray Nick Fury As Vulnerable
With Phase 5 of the MCU gaining momentum, Marvel has officially invaded the television screens in people’s homes with the release of Marvel’s Secret Invasion. Boasting an impressive cast of Samuel L Jackson, Emilia Clarke, and Cobie Smulders, the series has been getting love and affection from people all around the world.
Following a storyline of the Skrulls shapeshifting into iconic people and wreaking havoc on Earth, it is up to S.H.I.E.L.D. to stop these invasions from happening. Talking about his role in an interview, it seemed that Jackson had a different take on Nick Fury. The Django Unchained actor talked about how he wanted to portray Nick Fury as vulnerable to show how humane he actually was. Marvel boss Kevin Feige allowed this request and the final result came out to be just spectacular.
“[He’s not a] swagalicious one-eyed guy that knows everything that will kill you in a hot minute. He’s vulnerable and kind of finding his way in this.”
The series does now allow the audience to ever feel a dull moment since Game of Thrones alum Emilia Clarke stated that there’s plenty of suspense from the first episode itself.
Emilia Clarke Says Secret Invasion Is Not Like Other MCU Shows
To clear some things out of the way, the star cast of Secret Invasion does not have superpowers in the series. Being soldiers trained in gun warfare and instincts, Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and G’iah fight their way through and through with no superpowers, unlike other MCU show characters. Talking about it in an interview, Emilia Clarke stated that this was not your average MCU show.
“Superheroes can’t fix the problems that we’re trying to fix. So, it’s innately human. There are people talking in rooms, which you’re not used to in the MCU. But they’re always trying to mess with convention. They’re always trying to create something genuinely new.”
Samuel L Jackson further added,
“It happens in a very organic kind of way, to know that we’re inside something that doesn’t have a superhero solution.”
With an average rating of 7.4/10 on IMDB and 66% on Rotten Tomatoes with its debut, Marvel’s Secret Invasion episode 1 is available to stream on Disney+. The second episode of the series is slated for a release date of 28th June 2023 during its 6-episode runtime.
