Shia LaBeouf is not someone who often comes in front of the camera and is candid about himself. Even with his lack of interviews, he likes to reflect on himself from time to time. Although now the actor is enveloped in controversies and allegations, his impact on Hollywood has greatly declined. In a rare interview, the actor opened up about his experience of being someone who is not picked as usual as others for roles.
In his journey, he also revealed some things about David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. It gave a much bigger insight on what could have been a great movie but the fans were robbed of it from then on. The actor saw himself being replaced one after the other, but the one that stood out the most was Will Smith’s movie.
Shia LaBeouf Gave Insight On How Will Smith Impacted Suicide Squad’s Script
Shia LaBeouf was first in line to try out for Lieutenant GQ Edwards in Suicide Squad. The film had grabbed his attention and his friendship with David Ayer made it even more possible. The director himself wanted the actor to take over the role but Warner Bros. Discovery was not fond of the idea. They instead went for Scott Eastwood who ultimately played the character. LaBeouf opened up about what exactly led things to change.
“Then Will [Smith] came in, and the script changed a bit. That character and Tom [Hardy’s] character [later played by Joel Kinnaman] got written down to build Will up.”
Before Will Smith came on board, Tom Hardy was set to play Colonel Rick Flag. However, after the actor got involved, they had to replace him and the reason was purely the Men in Black actor. As the studios had got Smith, they wanted to increase the significance of his role. To do so, Hardy’s role’s impact was decreased. Hardy was later replaced by Joel Kinnaman. After James Gunn took over the DC Universe, there was speculation about an Ayer Cut being released for Suicide Squad as well.
Shia LeBeouf Became Someone People Did Not Want To Hire
Shia LeBeouf was looking forward to being part of Suicide Squad. He reflected on how things slowly changed for him throughout the years and that led to people stepping away from him. They would rather not hire him regardless of how much talent he has.
“I don’t think Warner Bros. wanted me. I went in to meet, and they were like, ‘Nah, you’re crazy. You’re a good actor, but not this one.’ It was a big investment for them.”
No matter how much he wanted the role, he could not get the part because WBD was not willing to hire him. Moreover, they would rather hire someone else than him, choosing not to invest in LeBeouf.
