Denzel Washington has been recognized around the world as a notable and iconic actor with several awards and nominations to his name. Having spent almost 30 years in Hollywood, the actor was several years late to star in a sequel.
While rejecting sequel ideas and franchises, Denzel Washington led the people to believe that he doesn’t star in sequels. It wasn’t until The Equalizer 2 in 2018 that Washington starred in his first-ever sequel because the movie just made sense to him.
Denzel Washington Starred In His First-Ever Sequel Back In 2018!
After having spent several decades in Hollywood, Denzel Washington never appeared in sequels or threequels throughout his career. Starring and earning Oscars on the basis of stand-alone films, people started spreading a wild rumor regarding Washington.
Talking about the 2018 movie titled The Equalizer 2, Washington revealed that it was his first time starring in a sequel. Talking about how the movie just made sense to him, Washington blatantly asked Variety why starring in sequels was not a good idea.
“People keep talking about it, but it’s not that big a deal. Is there a curse for doing sequels?”
Washington was quick to talk about the other offer that he was made alongside Ryan Reynolds. As per the reports, Reynolds and Washington starred in the 2012 movie Safe House. Well, talks of another project in the franchise were ongoing and Denzel Washington was asked to reprise his role. The only problem was that he was dead in the first movie!
Denzel Washington Had Never Been Asked For A Sequel
With his character dead in the first movie, it seems a pretty impossible task to reprise the role in a sequel (unless it’s the Fast & Furious franchise). Starring alongside Ryan Reynolds, Washington portrayed the role of a CIA agent back in 2012. In an interview with Variety, the actor talked about how the sequel did not make sense.
“I haven’t been asked. The only time I’ve been asked was for ‘Safe House,’ but that didn’t make sense because my character had died, so they were talking about a prequel. And I was asked for ‘Inside Man. But this one [The Equalizer 2] just made sense.”
The sequel earned an average rating of 6.7/10 on IMDB and 52% on Rotten Tomatoes but it broke Denzel Washington’s curse of not being able to star in sequels. The 2018 movie is available to stream on Hulu in the U.S.
