After struggling for 2-decades as an obscure actor in West Hollywood, recent times have witnessed Taylor Sheridan becoming one of the most prolific writers in the game. From crafting his “modern American frontier” trilogy, including Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River, to producing one of the most beloved TV Shows in recent times, Sheridan has accomplished a lot in his stint as a writer.
But despite making a huge name for himself through his acclaimed projects, the former working actor was dispirited that the success of his beloved projects didn’t transcend to real life as he hoped.
Taylor Sheridan Failed His Mission Despite Projects’ Enormous Success
Taylor Sheridan has been a rancher his whole life, growing up in the shadow of the Four Sixes, on which he eventually based his Yellowstone‘s scope and operation. And apart from crafting one of the biggest TV Shows on the planet, the screenwriter had a secret mission to inspire people to save ranches in real life, as Yellowstone is about a dying American way of life.
This isn’t something new for Sheridan, as even with his acclaimed movie Sicario, starring Emily Blunt, he wanted to start the discussion about the “jumbled mess at the border”. But unfortunately, by the time he was crafting the third season, he worried that his secret mission might be doomed.
“I thought I had tricked people by showing a world worth protecting,” he says. “But when the show is over, that notion will go away and there will be a new shiny penny everyone watches. So I felt like I didn’t accomplish anything — which, for me, is really important. Sicario is entertaining, but it’s about something: the jumbled mess at the border.”
But despite failing in his mission, Sheridan’s work hasn’t stopped scoring huge numbers among fans and critics. However, things are not all well behind the closed doors of Yellowstone, as the show is set to abruptly end after Kevin Costner decided to part ways with John Dutton, and Taylor Sheridan eventually broke his silence.
Taylor Sheridan Wished Kevin Costner Well for His Future Endeavors
While reports claimed that there might be alleged bad blood between Sheridan and Kevin Costner, the Sicario writer clarified that his “opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered”. Although he is disappointed that it truncates the closure of his character, Sheridan wished Costner well for his upcoming four-film series, Horizon: An American Saga.
“His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one.”
While Yellowstone might be nearing its end, Sheridan implied the character of Kevin Costner’s John Dutton was never meant to survive till the end, and it might not have much impact on the end result.
Yellowstone is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
