Actress Hayley Atwell, who is well-known for playing Peggy Carter in the MCU, recently revealed that Marvel Studios intentionally hid the real identity of Peggy Carter’s husband in 2014’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
The actress was amazed by the way Marvel handled the situation, setting up the future of the franchise. Atwell played the role of Peggy Carter in several MCU projects, with the most notable ones being, 2013’s short film Agent Carter and the 2015 TV show, Agent Carter. At the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Captain America traveled back in time to live a life with Peggy Carter, marking the end of Chris Evans’ Captain America.
The identity of Peggy Carter’s husband was hidden
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) confirmed that Peggy Carter got married while Steve Rogers was “asleep” for nearly 70 years. The actress who played the character, Hayley Atwell, recently revealed how the identity of Peggy Carter’s husband was intentionally hidden. The actress said,
“I remember when I was filming it, the prop master had put a framed photograph on Peggy’s bedside, of Peggy with her husband and her children, and Louis de Esposito ran over just before we started rolling, going ‘Take that out. We don’t know yet. We don’t want to limit ourselves by kind of suggesting this is who she’s married’ and so that was taken out. And I thought, ‘OK, that’s really interesting.'”
The producer of the film, Louis de Esposito, removed the frame so they can create more possibilities in the future. The only information regarding Carter’s husband that the viewers got was that Captain America saved his life.
Hayley Atwell praised Marvel
Atwell further praised Marvel for the way they keep their audiences hooked by creating endless possibilities. The actress said,
“I think what [Marvel is] so good at, they’re so good at giving the audience what they want and exceeding the expectations. And I think that’s why they’re always aware of just feeding the amount of information that the audience need to know, to keep engaged, but also delighting them and surprising them with, with new information.”
In the 2015 show, Agent Carter, Daniel Sousa was Carter’s love interest. However, the show was canceled and fans never got the full story.
Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter got their happy ending
At the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Rogers returns the Stones and Mjolnir to their proper timelines and remains in the past to live with Carter. In the present, an elderly Rogers passes his shield to Sam Wilson, marking the end of Chris Evans’ Captain America.
Fans can only hope to see who was Carter’s husband in the next phase of Marvel. For now, it seems like there’s a long time before Marvel explores that part of the story again.
