As James Gunn is set to say his goodbyes to the MCU after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the director will be shifting his full focus to the DCU and his upcoming project Superman: Legacy. However, this isn’t the first time when Gunn had the opportunity to craft a Superman project, as back in 2018 even before he was appointed for The Suicide Squad, Gunn was offered the job to direct a Superman movie.
Although he initially rejected the opportunity as he didn’t figure it out at the time, the director is now ready to bring the iconic character back to his original roots with Superman: Legacy. Gunn also opened up about why this upcoming project is so much important to him, as he can deeply relate to the character of Clark Kent.
James Gunn deeply relates to the character of Superman
Following the axing of Henry Cavill from the role of Superman and with the DC universe heading toward a reset, James Gunn‘s Superman: Legacy will be the first major release in the new universe. While reflecting on the importance and his attachment to the upcoming project, James Gunn explained his reasoning for why he can deeply relate to the character of Superman by stating,
“I completely relate to Superman because he’s everything I am. He’s somebody who is an outsider who feels like an alien, but also the ultimate insider, because he’s f***ing Superman. And that’s kind of like what I feel like.”
But unlike the previous iterations of the character in the last several years, Gunn’s version of Superman will resemble the essence of its comic book counterpart while respecting all the previous versions. The director further reflected on some of the queries from fans, who were concerned about the upcoming movie’s tone.
James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy will not be a comedy
Although Gunn has perfected his footing in the superhero landscape and is known for bringing his unique approach to his projects, he assured fans that his Superman project will be different from his previous works. Considering that Gunn is famous for his unique comedy style, fans were questioning whether the upcoming movie will fall under the same territory or not. But the director recently clarified fans’ concerns and stated that his upcoming DC project will not be a comedy but will be a classic superhero story.
Even though James Gunn’s movies are remembered for their brilliant comedy, it doesn’t take away from the fact that he is a genius in crafting characters with extreme emotional depth and brilliant drama. And with The Flash set to create a fresh slate for Gunn to implement his plans, it’s reasonable to be optimistic about the future of DC with Gunn in control.
Superman: Legacy will hit theatres on 11 July 2025.
