Sylvester Stallone’s rise to fame can be attributed to his iconic portrayal of the fictional boxer, Rocky Balboa, in the Rocky series. Released in 1976, the first Rocky film became an instant sensation, earning Stallone critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. However, he wasn’t the studio’s first choice to play the part.
The underdog story of Rocky resonated with audiences worldwide, and Stallone’s dedication to the character and his physical transformation added authenticity to the role. The success of the Rocky franchise catapulted Stallone into the spotlight, solidifying his status as a Hollywood action star and establishing a legacy that continues to inspire and entertain audiences to this day.
Producers Had To Mortgage Houses To Cast Sylvester Stallone
Despite financial hardships, Sylvester Stallone’s determination and belief in his own abilities led to a life-changing opportunity. When producers Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff expressed interest in his script for Rocky, they offered him a substantial sum of $350,000 for the rights. However, Stallone made a bold decision with only $106 to his name and faced the prospect of selling his dog due to financial struggles. He refused to sell unless he was given the chance to star in the film.
They reached an agreement on the condition that Stallone would continue his work as a writer without compensation and take on the role of an actor at minimal pay. Once Winkler and Chartoff acquired the film, they presented it to United Artists. The studio envisioned a $2 million budget and desired renowned actors like Robert Redford, Ryan O’Neal, Burt Reynolds, Nick Nolte, and James Caan to be part of the project.
Upon learning that securing the screenplay required Stallone’s involvement as the lead, Winkler and Chartoff informed United Artists. In response, United Artists reduced the budget to $1 million and insisted that Chartoff and Winkler assume personal liability in case the film exceeded the allocated funds. Ultimately, the film’s total expenses amounted to $1.1 million. To cover the remaining $100,000, Chartoff and Winkler resorted to mortgaging their own houses.
Was Mortgaging Houses Worth It For Producers?
