Parents Speak Out Against Racism: Letter of Complaint Submitted to NDHSAA
Four parents have written a letter of complaint to the North Dakota High School Activities Association, claiming racial slurs and taunts including monkey screeches and war cries being aimed at students of color during sporting events.
The complaint was sparked after a basketball game between Jamestown High School and Bismarck High School on January 31st, 2023. The parents claim that the on-site administrators did nothing to intervene. The school districts have issued statements and promises of change, but the parents are seeking more severe consequences for the “racial taunting”.

The NDHSAA has guidelines in its code of conduct that require immediate action against disrespectful acts. One of the targeted students, Andre Austin, a Bismarck High basketball player, reported that he was called the N-word and taunted with monkey noises during the game.
He and his parents, along with the parents of another Bismarck player, submitted the letter of complaint to the NDHSAA.
