British actor Joseph Quinn was propelled to international stardom with his role as Eddie Munson in the fourth season of Stranger Things. He acts as the metal-obsessed oddball of Hawkins, who is accused of murder and kidnapping by the ‘normal’ teens of the town. He also acts as a mentor to Gaten Mattarazzo’s Dustin.
Quinn has since been regarded as a star in the making, being on the list of actors to watch out for by Variety and even becoming the face of Dior. He is in talks to star in A Quiet Place: Day One, a spin-off of the A Quite Place franchise, as well as Ridley Scott’s Gladiator 2. Recently, it was also reported that he was being eyed to star in a reboot of the Jason Bourne franchise.
Joseph Quinn In The Bourne Franchise
According to the sources of the entertainment website Giant Freakin Robot, Universal Pictures have been hoping to soft reboot the Bourne franchise, with a new and younger actor to be a spy in the same universe as Jason Bourne. The franchise has been at a standstill without any development since 2016’s Jason Bourne, which saw the return of franchise star Matt Damon.
Actor Joseph Quinn is being looked at for headlining this spin-off/soft reboot film set in the universe of Jason Bourne. Reports suggest that Quinn’s spy will be part of another Government program, similar to Matt Damon’s Operation Treadstone, that is looking to create super-assassins.
According to Giant Freakin Robot, Universal has approached Bullet Train director David Leitch to take over the reins as director for the reboot. Leitch has had experience directing an in-universe spin-off film as he had directed the spin-off film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which starred Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham reprising their roles from the Fast & Furious franchise.
Leitch is also directing the upcoming cinematic adaptation of The Fall Guy starring Ryan Gosling. Joseph Quinn’s Bourne reboot is set to have screenwriter Drew Pearce join David Leitch to write the script. Pearce has collaborated with Leitch on Hobbs & Shaw as well as The Fall Guy.
Matt Damon’s Bourne Franchise
The soft reboot comes at a time when actor Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass have been non-committal about a possible return of the character. Damon started the franchise in 2002 with The Bourne Identity. Based on the novel series by Robert Ludlum, the film saw Damon’s Jason Bourne who wakes up without any memory of his identity. The film follows his quest to find out who he is while trying to fend off three assassins who stop at nothing to kill him.
The action film was a blockbuster, earning over $215 million at the box office. It prompted the launch of a franchise that had three sequels namely, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Jason Bourne. The franchise also received a spin-off film with Jeremy Renner titled The Bourne Legacy.
After Matt Damon left the franchise before The Bourne Legacy, he returned to it with 2016’s Jason Bourne. However, both Damon and director Paul Greengrass are not enthusiastic about a return to the franchise with a sixth film. Greengrass has essentially shut the door on his return as he mentioned that he has had his stint with the character. With Greengrass not returning, Damon too might not be keen on being Bourne again.
At such a time, instead of waiting for the creators to commit to a project, the studio seems to be revisiting their spin-off plan just the way they did with Jeremy Renner’s The Bourne Legacy. With Joseph Quinn not confirmed to reprise his role as Eddie Munson in the final season of Stranger Things, it gives him plenty of time to be in the Bourne franchise.
While The Bourne Legacy was critically panned upon release, with David Leitch as director and Joseph Quinn starring, it might just work. And, if it works well enough, it might prompt Matt Damon to crossover to this part of the universe, which could lead to an epic team-up film.
