It’s safe to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was not only the best COD game in recent memory but one of the most photorealistic games to come out from Activision. Considering the state of modern gaming has mostly been a hit or a miss with many products failing to deliver to set expectations, Modern Warfare II was a breath of fresh air, as it lived up to the hype surrounding it.
Although the campaign for the game isn’t the best to come out of this series, the story isn’t the main highlight of this technological marvel that Activision Blizzard has crafted. One of the prime factors that put the game into the spotlight and made it one of the series’ biggest successes was its visuals.
The technology used to craft the photorealistic visuals of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II
In order to achieve the photorealistic visuals for the sequel to 2019’s reboot Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, the developers for Modern Warfare II took extreme measures from the production’s get-go. The FPS involved a plethora of methods like photogrammetry and performance capture in order to make the game more immersive and attain perfection in their quest to achieve hyperrealism.
The Photogrammetry process involves taking images of an object from several angles and stitching them together to provide a 3D replica of the object. This technique was also used in scanning and crafting the wear and tear in the costumes to immerse the player in the story, as Insider explains, “This process only looks haphazard, story matters”. And thanks to the developers’ immense passion for the project, they were able to push the boundaries of realism when it comes to video games.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II outshined Elizabeth Olsen’s movie by a substantial margin
The determination and passion of the creators did pay off, as the game made big numbers, becoming one of the series’ biggest successes. Up on its release, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II instantly become a success and made $1 billion in sales within 10 days. Following the games’ technological achievement in Q4 2022, the Modern Warfare sequel delivered the highest opening-quarter sales in the franchise’s history, making around $1.85 billion in net revenue. This number surpasses and is almost double the Elizabeth Olsen-starring Doctor Strange 2‘s $955M collection.
Considering the last few years have been a mixed bag for gamers, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was a gift for FPS lovers and a step in the right direction for the series’ future.
