Steven Spielberg put the foundation of the action-adventure franchise Indiana Jones with the 1981 film Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark. Starring the Hollywood star Harrison Ford, the fifth installment in the film series was released last month. However, instead of Spielberg, James Mangold took the seat of director for the fifth installment. And, the movie was not able to make it as big as its predecessors at the box office.
However, the lead star of the film series doesn’t seem to be bothered by the absence of the film director, as he said that he is more comfortable leaving the franchise now than at any other time.
Harrison Ford Talks About Steven Spielberg’s Absence
Steven Spielberg has worked on the Indiana Jones film series since the very first movie, which was released years before in 1981. The Hollywood star Harrison Ford has also portrayed the character for decades and reprised the role in the fifth installment of the series.
However, Spielberg did not make his return as the director for the 2023 film in the franchise. While he was initially associated with the film as its director, he later stepped down from his seat, after which the Logan director, James Mangold, took over the film. The Jaws director, however, has been associated with the film as its executive producer.
Talking about his absence from behind the camera, Ford said, “Steven’s in here and here,” as he pointed to his head and heart. He further mentioned that the director is involved in every aspect of the film and even has a huge influence on Mangold, his work, his style, and his method of work.
He also shared that the Oscar-winning director often visited Mangold in the editing room as well. Although he was not associated as the director with the film, Spielberg has praised the film, saying that it is a “really, really a good Indiana Jones film” and he is proud of what The Wolverine filmmaker has done with it.
Harrison Ford Was Comfortable Leaving the Franchise
During his recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Harrison Ford talked about reprising his character in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. And he has said that he decided to reprise his character as he believed that “there was room for one more story.”
He stated that he wanted the last story of the adventurer archeologist to deal with the age, time, and his relationship with his family. And this is the reason he was more comfortable leaving the franchise with Indiana Jones 5. “I’m more comfortable leaving him at this place than he was at the end of Crystal Skull,” Ford said during his interview.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is playing in theatres.
