If you are one of the many Xbox fans anticipating the release of Bethesda Game Studios exclusive, Starfield, then you may be excited to learn that the game’s first expansion, “Shattered Space” has already been announced. Todd Howard, director and executive producer for the game developer, recently did an interview with IGN, where he stated that Bethesda plans to release a great deal of add-on content after the title releases in September.

This announcement indicated that there will be several DLC’s, some larger than others, that will continue to grow the world that Bethesda has designed. While this revelation is a great promise to those who are ready to dive into Starfield’s massive open-world map, it has many questioning if it’s all too much.

Just how big is Starfield? Will it need Shattered Space?

If you have been keeping up with the content that Bethesda has been putting out in anticipation for the release of Starfield, then you already know this game is going to be incredibly large. Players will have the opportunity to travel throughout the Milky Way, exploring over one thousand real and fictional planets as well as several space stations and a variety of moons. Todd Howard has even said that the game will come with over 250,000 lines of dialogue which is four times the amount of dialogue in Skyrim and twice as much as Fallout 4. The current projection for actual memory required of the Xbox to run such a hefty game is about 125GB. This leads to an even bigger question in the gaming community.

As you can see, Starfield is a massive game in and of itself, but does it need more content? Since Starfield is already such a big game, some anxious gamers are wondering if Bethesda is going too far by already announcing its first expansion. If the content becomes so great, but lacks the necessary imagination, this could lead to very flat characters and uninteresting plotlines. It has been said that a good game requires quality over quantity, so this begs the question of whether demand will meet the level of content that Bethesda has supplied. In the current state of the gaming industry, which continues to lean further into storytelling and cinematics, gamers are hoping not to lose a well-crafted game to repetitive side-missions that do not add to the overall experience.

Todd Howard believes this is what the fans want and has pushed for such story based expansions that will bring even more to the world of Starfield. Perhaps the customizability of characters and weapons that is promised from Starfield will quell the worries held by hesitant gamers who hope for an experience to which they can devote hundreds of hours. However, until the release, fans are left to continue speculating over whether Bethesda has gone too far in trying to expand an already massive world.

Starfield releases for Xbox Series X/S on September 6, 2023. It can be pre-ordered with options ranging from a standard edition to constellation edition, which is the collectors item.
