Starfield has finally released as part of early access on Xbox, and Bethesda Game Studios is already fielding the critical response. Although it is certainly a time where fans will be giving their feedback for the highly anticipated RPG, it is important to recognize some of the positives. While it may not be gameplay or graphics related, the developers who worked on Starfield have created a memorial in the game to honor a gamer who passed away from cancer several months ago.
The gamer memorialized in Starfield was named Alex Hay. He was a huge fan of Bethesda franchises and enjoyed titles such as: Oblivion, Fallout, Skyrim, and Morrowland. There is no doubt he was excited for Starfield, but unfortunately, he died before getting to experience the space epic that has been created. Although he may not get to play the game, the developers at Bethesda ensured his legacy will live on in the stars.

The memorial, which was made for Alex Hay in Starfield, was spotted by Reddit user, HunterWorld. The tribute is titled “Alex Hay Note” and says the following:
“To all my friends and fellow explorers. I’m always with you out there in the Starfield. Love always, Alex Hay.”
The unfortunate truth is that Alex Hay knew he would not get to experience the game. When Starfield was originally set to release in November 2022, he planned for it to be a distraction from his lung cancer treatment. However, when it was delayed until September of this year, he realized the chances of him living to see another incredible franchise were much lower.
Alex posted to Reddit after making this determination and said:
“Bit gutted at the date reveal as I’ve been following this project for years and now it looks like I won’t get to play it.
Was disappointed with the delay from November as I’d stopped treatment for my lung cancer (aged 35, never smoked) in September and was looking forward to it as a distraction.
Now I’m under palliative care being looked after by my parents and playing my Xbox is a great form of escapism for me but holding out another 6 months is unlikely so… enjoy it on my behalf!”
Starfield is a title a lot of gamers have been anticipating for a very long time. It is a painful thought to know that a gamer who has cared so much for Bethesda Games Studios will not get to traverse the galaxy that they designed.
Alex Hay May Be Gone, But He in Starfield He Will Live On
In the midst of Bethesda receiving a variety of responses from gamers concerning Starfield, it is important to stop and appreciate what they have done. It certainly appears the entire development team cares about the players, and wants them to have the best experience possible. Todd Howard even considers the fans of Starfield to be incredibly smart, and admires the support system that was built around the game before it even launched.
Alex Hay was one of those incredibly gifted fans and he wished for Bethesda gamers to enjoy the title, even though he would not. It is important as you play through Starfield to appreciate the small moments, even if it is not your favorite game in the world.
You have the opportunity to enjoy the vast universe that has been created by Bethesda, so it is important to take in even the smallest of features. This is not to say you must love Starfield, but simply a reminder to appreciate the pastime of gaming, while you journey through the stars.
What do you think of the incredible tribute Bethesda has made for Alex Hay? Does it give you a better appreciation for the opportunity to play the game? Make sure to leave a comment as we celebrate the life of Alex Hay and the release of Starfield.
