‘Star Wars is officially dead’: Daisy Ridley’s Return as Rey Gets Criticized as Star Wars Fans Ask Lucasfilm to Bring Back John Boyega

Star Wars is making some big moves and fans are underwhelmed, to say the least.

The Mandalorian‘s astronomical success prodded Disney Studios to take a massive gamble on its $51.8 billion franchise by putting all its golden eggs in one basket, so much so, that the company has reportedly been concocting plans to crown Star Wars as, more or less, the focal point of its business. One way that Disney has already started to work on the same is by transforming its streaming site into a goldmine for Star Wars content, and another is by announcing multiple new projects.

But it looks like fans might not be too thrilled about one of the forthcoming Star Wars film with Daisy Ridley ready to make her comeback as Rey Skywalker.

Daisy Ridley to Reprise Her Role As Rey in New Star Wars Film

Owned by Lucasfilm, the Star Wars franchise has three brand new movies in line with two of them already set to go into production. Film producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy made a major revelation concerning the same on April 7, at Star Wars Celebration in London, as she announced Daisy Ridley’s return as Rey in the first upcoming Star Wars project.

The film will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, a Canadian activist and filmmaker who helmed certain episodes of MCU’s Ms. Marvel. Meanwhile, Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Steven Knight is set to be in charge of the script.

With Ridley, 30, reprising the role of the headstrong Jedi in the new Star Wars feature film, the plot is apparently going to revolve around her character, Rey Skywalker, and the movie will pick up after J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019).

Fans React Bitterly to Daisy Ridley’s Return As Rey

As far as the Star Wars crew goes, people seem to be pretty excited about Ridley’s comeback as Rey Skywalker in the upcoming movie. “For Daisy to come back and be part of where this is going, I’m excited to see where all at what happens there,” Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian‘s director told Variety. But they don’t seem to be sharing the same enthusiasm as Star Wars fans are busy rebuking Lucasfilm’s decision to bring back the Ophelia actress. Turns out they’re far more interested in John Boyega’s character, Finn instead.

Given Boyega’s disappointing experience and the insolent way he was treated in the franchise with Disney making money on his character by propping him to be a valuable asset only to sideline him later, it seems a little unlikely for him to come back to Star Wars. But one can dream.

No release date has been attached to the new Star Wars film yet.
