Jenna Ortega, who has made a name for herself in Hollywood has been part of some of the biggest smash-hit TV Series and movies ever created. Ortega’s recent performance on Netflix’s Wednesday has elevated her celebrity status to a whole new level. From her debut role on CW’s comedy-drama series Jane the Virgin to her present role in Netflix’s Wednesday, she has consistently delivered powerful performances which have captivated the viewers.
As a result, Jenna Ortega has a massive following on her social media accounts, which has immensely affected her mental health because of the hate and harassment, she was receiving online. The Scream VI actress opened up about her struggles with her mental health and the pressure it puts on young celebrities working in the movie industry.
Jenna Ortega Opens Up About Manipulative Social Media Environment
Recently during an exclusive interview for Varitey’s Actor on Actor series, renowned actresses Jenna Ortega and Elle Fanning were present together to share their work experience in Hollywood, and how their life has changed after being in the limelight. Both actresses shared their embarrassing stories of bad auditions, and the struggles of growing up as child actors, but one thing that they both shared was the negative aspects of social media.
While discussing the negative aspects of social media, Jenna Ortega called social media “manipulative” and has often found herself criticized by her followers for being her real self.
“Because I naturally tend to be sarcastic or dry, it’s very easy for me to find myself in trouble.”
The You actress shared how the person, they see in the movies or the TV Series is not the same person behind the camera, which the people fails to understand, and the more she is exposed to the limelight, the more she gets preyed upon by the people for her insecurities.
“I want people to be able to get to know the people behind the camera and realize that people should never be put on a pedestal. And the more I’ve been exposed to the world, people prey on that and take advantage of that.”
Jenna Ortega breaks down, stating how people viciously target her insecurities which one would not expect. She explains how she would like to feel like a normal human being and people always demand her to “have more energy,” or “could you smile?” This aspect has affected her psychologically but she will not succumb to the request of these toxic people.
“They see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect. [Starts to cry] It’s so strange. Sorry, I didn’t mean to do this. I still have this really intense urge to be human and honest and authentic. Another thing about this industry is you get in front of a camera and people want you to be something else — where it’s ‘Have more energy’ or ‘Could you smile?’ I would rather people see me cry and do whatever than be something I’m not.”
While the actress is trolled brutally on social media some people find that the actress brought the public shaming on herself after she called herself “unprofessional” while talking about the creative differences, she had on the set of Wednesday.
Jenna Ortega Criticises Her Netflix Show
In March, the actress was present on the Armchair podcast, where she discussed her experience while filming the TV Series, sometimes she would become “unprofessional in a sense,” where she would start making changes to the script, and she would not care less to inform the writers of the show.
“There were times on that set where I almost became unprofessional in a sense, where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought that I was like, going with something, and then I would have to sit down with the writers and they would be like, ‘Wait, what happened to this scene?’ And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn’t do certain things.”
Jenna Ortega also criticized the writers of the show for certain plot developments which made very little sense and did not compliment her character and even criticized her dialogues stating how much she hated saying certain lines in the series.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set in the way that I had to on Wednesday. Everything that she does, everything that I had to play, did not make sense for her character at all. Her being in a love triangle made no sense. There was a line about a dress that she has to wear for a school dance and she said, ‘Oh my God, I love it. Ugh, I can’t believe I said that.”
While the viewers and critics praised the show with positive comments, and the show topped the Netflix charts for several weeks is showcasing a different picture. As a result, many people criticized the actress for her comments, which directed hate toward the actress.
