Henry Cavill recalls his worst audition in front of Patrick Stewart
In his initial struggling days, the actor had done a few scenes in the film The Count of Monte Cristo. After that the next several years, he was literally living on sofas and crashed at his girlfriend’s and friends’ places. But, Cavill auditioned regularly without caring if they were good or bad. For the 2003 film, The Lion in Winter, the actor had to audition for a part with X-men fame Patrick Stewart. After reading his part, he walked out in embarrassment. Man of Steel star said to Men’s Health,
“I was so shit.”
Cavil added,
“It’s terrifying going into auditions. You put your hand into a dark hole and just hope that something comes out. It’s not like being fast or strong or being good at football. Sometimes the acting is just bad.”
The cast of the film comprised Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close, Andrew Howard, John Light, Rafe Spall, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Julia Vysotskaya.
Henry Cavill went back for a second audition
Talking to Patrick Stewart, Henry Cavill revealed that he was very embarrassed by his audition with him and walked out. But he was inspired by the humility of the actor Patrick Stewart and was determined to do better. Hence, he asked his agent to get him another chance at the audition.
The actor shared,
“We met many years ago, I believe it was 2003. You were casting for The Lion in Winter and I had been acting for three years at that stage. My first job was at The Count of Monte Cristo when I was 17 years old. I left school one year early. I was extremely nervous to audition in front of an actor of your caliber. I went into the audition and I had spent weeks learning my lines. By the time I had gotten in there, I had whipped myself into such a frenzy that I completely flubbed the audition.”
“I didn’t remember my lines, and I forgot how to act. Then, I left with my tail between my legs and called my agent immediately. You were very gracious and you said, ‘Thank you very much.'”
Mission: Impossible – Fallout fame added,
“As I was walking down some street in London, I thought, ‘I’m not going to walk away from an audition with Sir Patrick Stewart. Have it be a battle. Try to get back in there because I know that I can do better.’ So, my agent arranged for me to go back in and you said yes… I did another audition and it went far better. Not good enough to get the job, but it was far better. You gave me very kind words and you said, ‘I’m so glad that you came back in.’ That gave me such strength throughout my career and I’ve never forgotten it.”
Though his acting was much better the second time, he could not get the role. The film was directed by Andrei Konchalovsky.
